How the illness of big leaders became a political issue in the country’s politics

New Delhi: Expressing apprehension of a ‘conspiracy’ behind the sudden deterioration in the health of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday promised that if BJP forms the government in the state, the matter will be investigated. Addressing an election rally, Modi said that the question is whether there is any conspiracy behind the deterioration in Naveen Babu’s health? The people of Odisha have the right to know this. Is there a hand of that lobby in Odisha which is enjoying power in the name of Naveen Babu behind the scenes? In response to this, Naveen Patnaik said that his/her health is fine and he/she has been campaigning for a month. Naveen Patnaik said that he/she (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) had earlier publicly said that I am his/her good friend. he/she just had to call me and inquire about my health but the people of BJP are spreading rumors about my health. This is not the first time such a question has come up in politics. In the past too, questions were raised about the health of many leaders and the matter also went to court.

The matter of Kanshi Ram’s health had reached the court
Kanshi Ram, the founder of Bahujan Samaj Party and the leader who gave a new direction to Dalit politics, died in the year 2006. However, before Kanshi Ram’s death, there was a lot of controversy regarding his/her health and his/her living with the family. The matter had also reached the court. Kanshi Ram’s mother had filed a petition demanding permission to meet her ailing son and to provide him/her with necessary medical facilities. However, Kanshi Ram gave a statement before a commissioner appointed by the High Court that he/she is living in Mayawati’s house on his/her own will and no one has imprisoned him/her. Senior advocate Gopal Subramanyam, who appeared in the court on behalf of Kanshi Ram’s family, said that Kanshi Ram has been ill since last year. George Fernandes was the Defence Minister in the Vajpayee government, during that time his/her residence used to be 3 Krishna Menon Marg. After the NDA government went and lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, George Fernandes faced a housing crisis. his/her health was also not good. However, he/she soon reached the Rajya Sabha and the housing crisis was averted. During his/her tenure as Defence Minister and even after that, the gate of George Fernandes’ residence was never closed. he/she used to say that I do not want anyone to come to meet me and be stopped at the gate. But in June 2010, Jaya Jaitley was standing outside the door and she was stopped from going inside. In 2009, Laila Kabir returned to George’s life after 25 years. In the year 2010, Jaya Jaitley went to the court and said that she was not being allowed to meet George. She had been with him/her for the last 30 years. Two years later, the High Court’s decision came against her. After which she went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court overturned the High Court’s decision. She was allowed to meet George. George Fernandes died on 29 January 2019 at the age of 88.

Questions on Jayalalitha’s death
Many questions were raised about the death of former Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa. Many shocking things came to light in the report of Justice A Arumugaswamy Commission constituted to investigate Jayalalithaa’s death. Jayalalithaa died on 5 December 2016 at night, whereas according to eyewitnesses, she died a day earlier on 4 December. The day Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital, she fainted. Jayalalithaa’s close friend Sasikala and others were present there. She was admitted in an unconscious state. According to the report, whatever happened was handled very confidentially. At that time, Jayalalithaa’s supporters had alleged a conspiracy behind the death. The debate had increased so much that the doctor who came from London to treat Jayalalithaa gave clarification about this by holding a press conference.
