How much danger is there from Cyclone ‘Remal’ on Bengal? PM Modi held a meeting, know which areas will be affected


New Delhi: Cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ has taken a more severe form. It is expected to hit the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by midnight today. Issuing an alert in this regard, the Meteorological Department said that as soon as ‘Remal’ reaches the shores, winds will blow at a speed of 110 to 120 kilometers per hour. Their speed will be up to 135 kilometers per hour. Due to the cyclone, extremely heavy rain is expected in the coastal districts of West Bengal and heavy rain in the surrounding areas including Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a high level meeting regarding cyclonic storm ‘Remal’.

In this meeting, PM Modi reviewed with the officials the preparations and efforts being made to deal with Cyclone ‘Remal’. According to the Meteorological Department, ‘Remal’ is moving towards the north. It will hit the coasts between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh), south-west of Mongla port by Sunday midnight. Somnath Dutta, head of the eastern region of the Meteorological Department in Kolkata, said that winds will blow at a speed of 45 to 55 kilometers per hour in many districts of South Bengal today. Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and Purba Medinipur will be affected by this cyclone.

Possibility of deep impact of storm in Bengal

Somnath Dutta said that ‘Remal’ will cause damage in some parts of Bengal, but it is likely to be less destructive than cyclone ‘Amphan’ of 2020. In view of the cyclone, Eastern and South Eastern Railways have canceled several train services in the coastal districts of South and North 24 Parganas and East Medinipur district as a precautionary measure. On the other hand, Kolkata airport authorities have decided to suspend flight operations for 21 hours from Sunday afternoon due to the possible impact of cyclone ‘Remal’.

No operation on 394 flights from airport – AAI

A spokesperson of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) said that a total of 394 flights, both international and domestic, will not operate from the airport during the flight suspension period. Indian Coast Guard (ICG) officials said they have taken all precautionary measures to ensure that there is no loss of life or property at sea.

Apart from Bengal, impact will be visible on these states

‘Remal’ is the first cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal before the monsoon. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert of very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and North Odisha on May 26 and 27. There is a possibility of extremely heavy rain in Assam and Meghalaya also. Very heavy rains are expected in Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura on May 27-28.

‘Red alert’ in some areas of Bengal

There is a possibility of storm waves up to 1.5 meters high when the cyclone reaches the coastal areas of West Bengal. Due to this, there is also a possibility of water logging in low-lying areas. The weather office has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in North Bay of Bengal till Monday morning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in North and South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts. Due to the possibility of extremely heavy rain in North and South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur districts, a ‘red alert’ has been issued for these areas. Nadia and Murshidabad districts may also receive heavy to very heavy rain on May 27-28.

Police administration made special preparations

A control room has been set up at Kolkata Police Headquarters in the wake of cyclone ‘Remal’. 10 teams of Kolkata Police have been deployed in 10 police divisions of the city. NDRF teams are also going to those districts which are likely to be affected by the cyclonic storm. The Sundarban mangrove forest is also likely to be affected by the cyclone. The Sundarbans is one of the largest forests in the world and is known for its diverse fauna, including 260 species of birds, the Bengal tiger and other endangered species such as the estuarine (saltwater) crocodile and the Indian python.
