Types of US Visa for Indians: Before entering any country in the world, a visa has to be taken, which in a way confirms that you can enter that country. Visa-free entry is also available in some countries, but this is only for the citizens of some countries. Generally, a visa has to be taken for every country. America is also one such country, where Indians have to apply for a visa before going, then have to give an interview, after which they are given a visa. The category of visa in America is divided into three categories, which are known as work visa, travel visa and study visa. The large population coming to America, the fourth largest country in the world, enters through these three visa categories only. There are many visa types in each category. On what basis does one get American visa?

According to the US State Department, the purpose of a person’s travel and other factors determine what type of visa he/she or she needs under US immigration law. As a visa applicant, you must prove that you meet all the necessary criteria to obtain the category of visa you are applying for.

On applying for a visa, the consular officer of the US Embassy will decide on the basis of the laws whether a person is eligible to get a visa or not. If he/she is given a visa, then which category will it be for. For example, if you want to come to America for work, then you will be given a work visa, but in that too it will be seen which category of work visa should be given to you.

How many types of US visas are there?

  • B-1 Visa: This visa is given to athletes, amateur or professional, who are participating in some prize money competition.
  • J Visa: This visa is given to students, professors, scholars etc. who come to America as exchange visitors.
  • E-3 Visa: Australian citizens get this visa to work in certain specific jobs under the ‘Australian Professional Specialty Program’.
  • BCC: Mexican citizens are given a ‘Border Crossing Card’, which is valid for 10 years.
  • B-1 Visa: This visa is given to business visitors, i.e. people who come for work.
  • D visa: This visa is given to those crew members who enter America via ships and aircraft.
  • A Visa: This American visa is given to foreign diplomats and government officials.
  • B-1 Visa: This visa is granted to a domestic worker or nanny when she arrives with a foreign national employer.
  • G1-G5, NATO visas: This visa is granted to employees of a designated international organization or NATO.
  • O Visa: This US visa is given to a foreign citizen who has exceptional abilities in science, arts, education, business or athletics.
  • Visa: People visiting each other’s countries for international cultural exchange are eligible for this visa.
  • L Visa: This visa is given to the employee who gets transferred from the foreign office of the company located in America.
  • B-2 Visa: Patients get this visa for medical treatment.
  • I Visa: This visa is given in America to people associated with media or journalists.
  • H-1B Visa: America gives this visa to physicians or doctors.
  • R Visa: Workers coming to do religious work get this type of visa.
  • H-1B Visa: This visa is given for special work in fields that require highly specialized knowledge.
  • F, M visas: Students coming to America to study get this visa.
  • H-2A Visa: The government gives this visa to a person who comes to America temporarily as an agricultural laborer.
  • B-2 Visa: This visa has to be obtained to travel in America.
