In a statement released on Friday by the Canadian Immigration Ministry, it said that 4,37,000 study permits will be issued this year, with a reduction of 10% compared to 2024. Canada laid a limit on the number of study permits to foreign students in 2024. This was done because the increasing pressure on the country’s resources is increasing due to the increasing population of foreign nationals. There was a crisis of homes in Canada and pressure on the healthcare sector started increasing.

Why was the number of students limited?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is going to step down in March, has vowed that he/she will reduce the immigration in the country. Many recent surveys also showed that Canadian citizens are not having a positive attitude towards foreign people. According to government data, in 2023, Canada issued more than 6.5 lakh study permits to foreign students.

In this way, the number of foreign students from different countries of the world in Canada exceeded 10 lakhs. It was three times more than the number of students who came to study decade ago. The population is increasing rapidly due to immigration, which has increased pressure on sectors such as healthcare and education. There is a increasing population of foreign students behind the price of houses.

Will you have to give verification letter for study permit?

However, it cannot be denied here that foreign students pay more tuition fees than local students. After the limit on the number of foreign students last year, now students will have to submit a provincial or regional verification letter before applying for the study permit. This year, master and post-doctoral students will also need this letter. The purpose of these verification letters is to confirm that the arrival of students will not increase the pressure on immigration, as they are within the limited limit of the government.
