How Israel-Iran became arch enemies after being friends for 30 years, will America make an agreement like Camp David?

New Delhi: Iran finally attacked Israel with missiles. he/she has claimed that the headquarters of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad was destroyed in these attacks. Iran also said it had avenged the deaths of Ismail Haniya and Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah. At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Iran has made a big mistake by carrying out these attacks. Now he/she will have to pay the price for this. America is also supporting Netanyahu in this matter. Enmity between Israel and Iran has reached its peak today, but once upon a time both were friends. Know the entire story of their friendship and enmity.

For Iran, America is big and Israel is a small devil.

According to Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, Assistant Professor in International Relations at South Asian University, the roots of Iran’s hostility have become so deep that it has started believing that Israel has no right to exist. Iran considers Israel as a small devil and America as a big devil. In the Middle East, Iran wants America and Israel to disappear from the region.
Will Hezbollah become a ‘bloodbath’? Israel is not repeating the mistake of 42 years ago.

Iran prepared Axis of Resistance against Israel

Israel believes that Hezbollah funds Hamas and the Houthi rebels and that Iran’s Supreme Commander Ayatollah Khamenei incites anti-Semitic organizations against Israel. Thousands of people have died so far due to the enmity between these two. Iran has prepared an Axis of Resistance against Israel.

Iran had once recognized the formation of Israel

According to Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, Iran’s relations with Israel were quite friendly until the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Before the Islamic Revolution, Iran was ruled by the Pahlavi dynasty. At that time, Iran was one of America’s major allies in the Middle East. When Israel was formed in 1948, Iran was the second Muslim country after Turkey to recognize Israel.

How Khomeini sowed the seeds of hatred towards Israel and America

Israel’s founder and head of its first government, David Ben Gurion, had made friends with Iran to pacify his/her Arab neighbors so that no one could say anything about the new Jewish state. But in 1979, the revolution led by hardline Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah and imposed an Islamic republic. Khomeini had declared himself the protector of Iran. he/she sowed the seeds of hatred towards America and Israel in Iran, the extreme form of which is visible today.

Ayatollah broke all relations with Israel

The Ayatollah’s government broke relations with Israel. It stopped recognizing the validity of its citizens’ passports and confiscated the Israeli embassy in Tehran, handing it over to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). At that time the PLO was leading the fight against Israel for a separate Palestine. The reason was that many commanders of the Ayatollah’s government had fought with the PLO in Lebanon.

When Israel fought with Iraq for Iran

This friendship between Israel and Iran was so deep that even after the arrival of Khomeini, Israel provided a lot of help to Iran during the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. What happened was that on September 22, 1980, Saddam Hussein’s army suddenly attacked Iran. Israel was at the forefront of providing military equipment to Iran during the war.

Iraq’s nuclear reactors were destroyed

Israel had given direct support to Iran’s war. At that time, Israel bombed Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor and destroyed it under Operation Babylon. The nuclear reactor was considered a part of Iraq’s nuclear weapons program. At that time Iraq was ruled by dictator Saddam Hussein.

Israel’s actions against Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi rebels, followed by Iran’s missile attacks, have marked the beginning of an endless enmity. There is no sign of this enmity ending yet. Only western countries including America can play the role of mediator in this.

Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, Assistant Professor, SAARC University

When the endless enmity against Israel began

It was 1982, when Israel invaded Lebanon and ousted the Palestine Liberation Organization. The upcoming creation of the security zone in South Lebanon temporarily benefited Israeli allies and the civilian Israeli population in Lebanon. The result was the emergence of a domestic Lebanese rather than Palestinian resistance movement within South Lebanon, where Hezbollah rose to power.

When America provided weapons to Iran

Antipathy toward Iran in Israel did not begin until the 1990s, when Saddam Hussein’s Iraq was considered a greater threat. It is also said that the Israeli government was a mediator in the Iran Contra Program. Under this program, weapons were provided to Iran in the war against Iraq between 1980 and 1988.

If Iran starts making nuclear weapons, the situation will become worse.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated further when it was revealed that Iran had started the work of acquiring nuclear weapons. Israel does not at any cost want any country in the Middle East to have nuclear weapons. Since then, the relations between the two countries further soured, which has now turned into staunch enmity.

Iran bought enmity with Israel to help Saudi Arabia

When Iran began to establish its dominance in the region, it also had to face the second major regional power, Saudi Arabia. Shia-dominated Iran created a different strategy to take on Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia and further fueled hostility against Israel. The objective was that Iran could become the leader of Muslims in the Arab world. Iran then created the ‘Axis of Resistance’ network in the form of Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi, which extends to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Shadow war begins between Israel and Iran

According to Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, the war between Israel and Iran is called ‘Shadow War’, because both the countries do not directly accept the attacks. The Islamic Jihadi group once linked to Iran had blown up the Israeli embassy in Argentina. Shortly before that, Hezbollah leader Abbas al-Musawi was assassinated. Mossad was accused for this. Israel is also considered responsible for the recent assassination of pro-Iranian Hamas leader Ismail Haniya in Tehran and the assassination of Hezbollah chief commander Nasrallah.

What is America’s stance on Iranian attacks?

Regarding Iran’s missile attacks, US President Joe Biden said that America fully supports Israel. Biden said that on his/her instructions, the US military actively helped protect Israel during this attack. he/she said that this attack has proved ‘failed’. At the same time, US Vice President Kamala Harris said that the way America helped Israel in shooting down Iranian missiles is absolutely right.

Will America not be able to make an agreement like Camp David?

Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi says that the Camp David Agreement was signed between Israel and Egypt on September 17, 1978, in which US President Jimmy Carter mediated. The Camp David Accords were signed by the then Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. With this agreement, peace was established between the two countries. Because of these agreements, Sadat and Begin jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. However, such an agreement seems difficult to be possible between Israel and Iran right now, because the issues between the two countries are complex and there is concern in the world community about Iran’s nuclear program.

Will there ever be an end to the enmity between Israel and Iran?

According to Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, the improvement in Iran’s relations with the West may lead Iran to reconsider its hostility towards Israel. However, for this to happen, conditions must arise for a more moderate leadership to re-emerge in Iran. Such a situation may arise after the death of the current supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Progress on the Palestine issue may also influence Iran to reconsider its position. For this, China, which is helping in the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, can also make some tacit agreements between Israel and Iran. However, it is too early to say anything right now.
