New Delhi : A total of 1,492 people died due to extreme weather conditions during this year’s monsoon season in the country. This information was obtained from data collected by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The data showed that 895 people lost their lives due to floods and rain-related incidents during the monsoon season, while 597 people died due to thunderstorms and lightning.

Heavy rain incidents 525 incidents

The IMD said the country experienced 525 heavy rainfall events (rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.5 mm) during the 2024 monsoon, the highest in the last five years, and 96 extremely heavy rainfall events (more than 204.5 mm). According to the data, 13 people in Jharkhand and four in Rajasthan died due to heat wave in the initial days of the summer season. In Kerala, on July 30, a devastating landslide hit the ecologically fragile Wayanad district and led to floods and heavy rains in the state, resulting in the death of 397 people.

102 people died in Assam

Floods and heavy rains in Assam and Madhya Pradesh resulted in 102 and 100 deaths respectively. 13 people died due to floods and heavy rains in the national capital Delhi. The data also revealed that Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of deaths (189) due to storm and lightning, followed by Uttar Pradesh (138), Bihar (61) and Jharkhand (53).

Monsoon season ends

The 2024 southwest monsoon season officially ended on Monday, with India recording 934.8 mm of rainfall – 107.6 per cent of the long term average and the highest since 2020. Central India received rainfall 19 per cent above the long-term average for the region, southern Peninsula received 14 per cent above normal and northwest India received 7 per cent above normal.

The geographical area of ​​India is divided into 36 meteorological subdivisions. 21 subdivisions recorded normal rainfall, 10 received excess rainfall and two received very heavy rainfall.
