New Delhi : An agreement has been reached between India and America related to the border dispute on LAC. After the agreement, soldiers of both the countries have started retreating from the identified areas. How was this agreement reached to end the tension that has been going on for four years between India and China? After all, what were the steps and processes behind the scenes due to which China finally agreed to compromise with India? External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar explained the story of this entire agreement in detail during an event in Pune on Saturday. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that to reduce the border tension with China recently on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The agreement reached was part of a ‘very determined effort’ by the government. The reason for this was that India stuck to its stand even during the standoff with China. Jaishankar also praised the role of the army in protecting the country in this entire matter. he/she said the military and diplomacy played their role in reducing tensions with Beijing.

If we have reached here today, it is because we have tried very hard to stick to our guns and make our point. The army was there (at the LAC) under very unimaginable circumstances to protect the country and the army did its job and diplomacy also did its job.

2 reasons behind the agreement

Jaishankar said that where we have reached today, there are two reasons, one – a very determined effort on our part to stand our ground and put forward our point and this was possible only because the Army is very important for the defense of the country. The external affairs minister also highlighted improved infrastructure over the last 10 years as one of the factors that led China to bring its troops back to where they were before the 2020 Galwan clash.

The External Affairs Minister said that today we are devoting five times more resources annually than we did a decade ago, which is yielding results and enabling the military to deploy truly effectively. he/she said that since September 2020, India was in talks with China to find a solution. The Foreign Minister said that this solution has various aspects. he/she said that the most important thing is that the soldiers have to retreat, because they are very close to each other and there was a possibility of something happening.

There was a ban on patrolling and we were trying to negotiate on this for the last two years. So what happened on 21st October was that in those particular areas Demchok and Depsang we came to an understanding that patrolling would resume the way it was earlier.

The second reason behind the agreement is that we have also improved our infrastructure over the last decade…I think it is the combination of all this that has brought us to where we are today. Jaishankar said that when Prime Minister Modi and President Xi met, it was decided that the foreign minister and the National Security Advisor would meet and see how to take it forward.
