Home Minister held high level meeting for the second consecutive day amid Manipur violence, decided to send 50 central force contingents

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting with officials on Monday after massive violence broke out again in Manipur. Apart from top officials of the central forces, top officials of the Intelligence Bureau and Home Ministry also participated in the meeting. The Home Minister has discussed the security situation in the state for the second consecutive day. According to sources, the Central government will send additional 50 CAPF companies with over 5,000 personnel to Manipur amid the ‘challenging’ situation in the state. Even before this, 20 companies had been sent. That means till now a total of 70 companies have been sent to Manipur to maintain law and order.

Situation in Manipur discussed in the meeting

According to the information, in the meeting, apart from discussing the reports of the officers deployed in the state regarding the latest violence, further steps to be taken were also discussed. The government is sending a company of CAPFs to Manipur to deal with the challenging situation. Following an order issued on November 12 after the violence that broke out in Jiribam district spread to other places, the Home Ministry had sent 20 additional CAPF companies to the state, including 15 from CRPF and five from BSF.

50 more companies of CAPF sent to Manipur

CRPF Director General A D Singh and senior officers of other central armed police forces are also present in the state. After last week’s deployment, there are now a total of 218 CAPF companies in the state. Manipur has been battling ethnic conflict since May last year. Sources said a plan is being prepared in consultation with the state government and the Home Ministry to deploy these new 50 units in Manipur depending on the level of violence reported and the changing law and order situation.

Situation critical in the state again

In Manipur, which has been battling ethnic conflict since May last year, people staged violent demonstrations after the bodies of women and children were recovered, due to which the situation there once again became unstable. The Union Home Ministry had said on Saturday that all the security forces deployed in Manipur have been instructed to take necessary steps to restore order and peace in the state. The ministry had said in a statement on Saturday, “The security situation in Manipur has remained critical for the last few days. Armed miscreants from both communities have been indulging in violence in the conflict. “People lost their lives in this violence and public order was disrupted.”
