The climax of Kamal Haasan’s recently released ‘Indian 2’ gave a glimpse of Kamal Haasan’s younger version, hinting towards part two. It is being speculated that Kamal Haasan’s young look will be recreated in part two with the help of artificial intelligence. Watching Bengal’s legendary actor Uttam Kumar in an AI-created avatar on screen in the Bengali film ‘Oti Uttam’ released some time ago was no less than a treat for his/her fans. But when the young character of famous Marathi actor Subodh Bhave was created through AI in the Marathi serial ‘Tu Bhetshi Navyane’, Subodh had to face severe criticism. People said that by taking the help of AI for the role of youth, Subodh has kicked the stomach of a deserving artist. he/she should have cast a young actor instead of an AI generated character for the younger version.

This shouldn’t happen in our lives

It was the magic of AI that after 42 years, Bengal’s great hero Uttam Kumar’s fans were able to see him/her in the role of a spirit in Oti Uttam. The film’s director Srijit Mukherjee says that when I heard Mohammad Rafi singing Donkey’s song ‘Lutput Gaya’, I understood the concept of AI. I was sad that I did not get a chance to work with the legend Uttam Kumar. Then I decided to bring alive this actor, who is considered a legend in Bengal, on screen with the help of AI. Indeed, the return of legendary actors on the silver screen of cinema through AI can be a pleasant thought, but what if our current superstars start getting recreated with the help of AI? On this question, Vicky Kaushal says, ‘At least this should not happen in our lifetime. But science has progressed so much. Anything can happen tomorrow. Science is like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it makes your life easier, but on the other hand that technology also takes away someone’s work. I am too young to comment on this, but I am scared as to how far can this go?

AI is scaring us

The young version of Ashwathama, played by Amitabh Bachchan in Kalki, attracted the audience a lot. Before that, Ranbir Kapoor’s younger and older version in Animal was very popular. Actor Indranil Sengupta says, ‘There is no harm in bringing late legendary actors to life through AI, nor is there any problem in showing a minor younger-older version of a character, but yes, if tomorrow someone creates an AI generated Salman Khan due to Salman Khan’s expensive fees, then it should be considered a criminal activity. Then all the artists should unite against it. Human talent should not be replaced by AI. There should be a regulatory act in this matter. It should not happen that tomorrow AI replaces humans. This is really very scary.’ Actress Raima Sen says, ‘Even when the internet came, we were very scared. Now AI is scaring us. I think, we have to use it properly. We should use AI instead of risking the life of the real actor or body double in dangerous stunt scenes. We can give the audience an amazing visual treat without putting the actors or body doubles at risk.’

AI will not be able to replace actors

Amit of Visual Birds Studio (VFX company) who created the younger and older versions of Ranbir Kapoor with the help of AI in Animal says, ‘What AI has achieved at this time is unbelievable. Today, the process of making Shahrukh Khan’s AI avatar has started after 3D scanning and technical procedures by his/her own company, but I would definitely like to say that it will not be able to replace the real Shahrukh Khan, because it will not be able to bring the emotions, expressions and actions of the real SRK. AI cannot replace actors in terms of acting. But no one can say what will happen in the future. Our team wants to take the rights from Rajinikanth and Mohanlal ji and start working on their AI avatars. That is a very long procedure. However, there are some people in my team who have started discussions and working on it. If this matter goes smoothly, it will create a legacy. Rajinikanth ji and Mohanlal ji will earn money throughout their lives. Even after they are no more.’

Then the manufacturer will go bankrupt

Shailesh Kamble, creative head of Visual Birds Studio, also believes that AI cannot be a threat to actors. he/she says, ‘Effects in one or two scenes like showing younger version of Amitabh Bachchan in Kalki can be done by AI, but replacement of actor in a three-hour film is not possible and people will not accept it. Suppose, if someone wants to make a film with Shahrukh Khan made with AI technology, then also a new technology will have to be created in AI to make it and its budget will be estimated to be not less than 500-600 crores. It will also take a lot of time. In last year’s Hollywood film Indiana Jones 5, Harrison Ford’s younger version was recreated, due to which it proved to be the most expensive budget film of that time. Whereas there were not many scenes of his/her younger version either. So, from the budget point of view also, it can bankrupt the producer. In such a situation, the producer will consider it a blessing to cast the real actor.’
