Heavy Rain Alert Across India: IMD Issues Warnings for Several States from May 18 to 23

The weather in India is changing rapidly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for multiple states from May 18 to May 23, 2025. This alert covers parts of North India, Northeast, Central, South India, as well as Delhi and Maharashtra.

This rainfall is part of the pre-monsoon season, which usually brings cooler temperatures. However, in some areas, it may also cause flood-like conditions. Here’s a complete breakdown of the regions under alert and what precautions people should take.

Delhi Weather Update: Rain Brings Some Relief, But Stay Cautious

In the national capital, Delhi, the weather is expected to shift starting May 18. According to IMD, partly cloudy skies and thunderstorms with rain are likely during this period.

Currently, Delhi is experiencing hot and humid weather, with temperatures expected to range between 24°C (minimum) and 41°C (maximum). The upcoming rain could bring much-needed relief, but it may also lead to waterlogging, traffic jams, and slippery roads, especially in the evening.

Residents are advised to travel carefully and stay updated with weather and traffic alerts.

Heavy Rain Forecast in Maharashtra: Farmers Advised to Take Precautions

Maharashtra is expected to witness intense pre-monsoon activity. According to weather reports, areas like Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Central Maharashtra could receive heavy rainfall from May 18–23.

During this time, there is also a risk of strong winds, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Rainfall has already begun in some regions, but it may become more intense in the coming days.

Farmers are urged to protect their crops, as excessive rain could damage standing fields. Other districts such as Nashik, Pune, Sangli, and Solapur are also under a rain alert, with possibilities of flooding, power cuts, and road issues.

Northeast India Under Threat of Heavy Rain and Floods

The Northeastern states of India are also expected to receive continuous heavy rainfall. IMD forecasts heavy showers from May 18 to 23 in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Nagaland. Tripura and Mizoram are also likely to be affected.

This much rainfall could cause rivers to overflow, increasing the risk of floods in low-lying areas. Residents should stay alert, especially in flood-prone zones.

South India to Experience Intense Rainfall with Thunderstorms

In Southern India, states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are under a similar rain alert. The forecast includes heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning between May 18 and 23.

While the rain may benefit farmers in these areas, it may also lead to urban flooding, waterlogging, and transport delays.

How to Stay Safe During the Rain Alert

During this period of unstable weather, it’s important to follow these safety tips:

  • Drive slowly and carefully, especially on wet and slippery roads.
  • Check traffic and weather updates before heading out.
  • Avoid low-lying flood-prone areas if heavy rain is expected in your region.
  • Farmers should take early precautions to protect crops from excess water.
  • Keep emergency supplies ready in areas likely to face power cuts or flooding.

Conclusion

Between May 18 and 23, large parts of India will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with the possibility of thunderstorms and floods in several states. Areas like Delhi, Maharashtra, the Northeast, and parts of the South are at higher risk.

The IMD has advised people to stay cautious and make necessary preparations. This weather change could bring both relief from heat and risks to safety and agriculture. Stay updated, stay prepared, and take all alerts seriously to avoid inconvenience or danger.
