Hearing of 45 cases on the very first day… Know how was Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s first day after becoming CJI.


New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has taken charge as the 51st Chief Justice of India. As soon as he/she became CJI, he/she heard 45 cases on the first day. he/she thanked the lawyers and bar officials for their good wishes. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to him/her in a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. After this, CJI Sanjeev Khanna entered the courtroom of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the afternoon. he/she was given a grand welcome by senior advocates from the Bar including former Attorney General and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi.

CJI Khanna received lots of good wishes

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said at the beginning of the day’s proceedings that I wish you a successful tenure as Chief Justice. Rohatgi had on Friday said that after more than a decade and CJI YK Sabarwal (late), the apex court will get another Chief Justice from the Delhi High Court. Other lawyers present in the court room also wished CJI Sanjeev Khanna.

Hearing of 45 cases on the first day as CJI

In the afternoon, the Chief Justice thanked the lawyers gathered in court room number one along with Justice Sanjay Kumar. When a member once raised an issue related to matters listed for hearing on a given day, CJI Sanjiv Khanna said it was in his/her notice and he/she would consider it. The CJI remained in the courtroom till 2.30 pm and heard 45 listed cases. Most of these were commercial matters.

Had Justice Sabarwal not been there, Chandrachud would never have become a judge, he/she himself told that story on retirement.

This comment was made on the petition of West Bengal government

On a petition filed by the West Bengal government against the arbitration award, CJI Khanna said that citizens cannot be misled. A bench headed by the Chief Justice of the country refused to hear the state government’s appeal against the arbitration award. In this, the state government was asked to make payment under promised tax incentives to a Mauritius-based company.

CJI Khanna will retire on 13 May 2025

Earlier, Justice Sanjeev Khanna took oath in English in the name of God at Rashtrapati Bhavan and assumed the post of CJI of the country. Justice Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a little more than six months. Will retire on May 13, 2025 on completion of 65 years of age.

Justice Khanna replaced DY Chandrachud, who was the CJI till now, who retired on Sunday. Apart from former CJI Chandrachud, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and former Chief Justice J. S. Khehar was present.
