he/she was worshipped in Dalit settlements… when Mayawati took over the reins of BSP for the first time

New Delhi: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has once again been elected as the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Mayawati is a political face whose influence and shine has been increasing with time. Whether she is in the government or not, Mayawati has always been discussed in political circles. Mayawati, a former member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in June 1995 and has held this responsibility four times. BSP was founded by Kanshi Ram in 1984 and Mayawati also played an active role in it. Kanshi Ram had declared Mayawati as his/her successor in his/her address during a rally in Lucknow on 15 December 2001. After Kanshi Ram fell ill, Mayawati was elected as the President of BSP for the first time on 18 September 2003 and after that she has been continuously elected as the President unopposed. Mayawati, who has been the Chief Minister four times, has very skillfully nurtured her Dalit vote bank amidst active politics. Political experts say that when Mayawati took over the reins of the party, she raised the voice of Dalits more loudly. Mayawati had a special focus on every big or small problem of Dalits. Political experts say that there was a time when Mayawati was worshipped in the Dalit settlements of UP. People used to say that because of Mayawati, the fear of the Dalit community has ended. They now used to express their views openly.

Surprising everyone, they formed the government in UP

In 2001, Kanshi Ram declared Mayawati as his/her successor. After this declaration, Mayawati became the Chief Minister of the state for the third time on 3 May 2002. This was a coalition government of BJP-BSP. During this time, Mayawati’s tying of Rakhi to senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon was in the news. But this time also her tenure did not last long. By August 2003, BJP announced withdrawal of support and Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister. Since Mayawati was the supreme leader of BSP in 2003 and Kanshi Ram had started falling ill, it was believed that her path would not be easy in the absence of Kanshi Ram. But in 2007, the opposite happened. BSP surprised all the political analysts of UP by winning majority for the first time and Mayawati became the Chief Minister for the fourth time. This was her first tenure, when she remained the Chief Minister for five years.
