P Chidambaram said that the task of drafting such important bills should have been entrusted to the Law Commission, not to a committee whose members work part-time.

Chidambaram said in a post on ‘X’ that the Union Home Ministry had constituted a committee in May 2020 to reform criminal laws, consisting of a chairman, convenor and members. Former Union Home Minister Chidambaram said that its composition was changed from time to time and finally the committee had a convenor and five members. Chidambaram said that except one member, all were serving professors of various universities and were working as part-time members of the committee. he/she said that this committee had submitted the draft of three new criminal laws.

Chidambaram said that after this the Parliament passed these laws. The Congress leader said, ‘I believe that the task of drafting such important bills should have been entrusted to the Law Commission, not to a committee whose members work part-time and have other responsibilities.’ A day before this, on Saturday, Dhankhar had targeted Chidambaram for his/her comment that these new laws were prepared by part-time persons.

Dhankhar, while addressing an event in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, had said, “Are we part-timers in Parliament? This is an insult to the wisdom of Parliament, for which there is no apology, I have no words to condemn such thinking and calling an MP inefficient.” he/she said, “I appeal to Chidambaram from this platform to please withdraw this objectionable, defamatory and reprehensible comment about MPs. I hope he/she will do so.”
