Has your migraine pain suddenly increased? The study revealed the reason behind this

New Delhi: Scientists have found a direct link between increased headaches and hot temperatures for people suffering from migraines. They say that as the temperature increases, the chances of migraine pain also increase. Vincent Martin, director of the Headache and Facial Pain Center at the University of Cincinnati, USA, said that change in weather is one of the most common reasons for migraine.

Headache increases when the temperature rises

The study looked at the use of the drug fremanezumab to see if it could prevent headaches caused by rising temperatures. Fremanezumab is given via injection. It is part of a set of monoclonal antibodies that have come to the market in the last six years to treat migraine patients. The researchers combined 71,030 daily diary records from 660 migraine patients with regional weather data and found that every 0.12 degree Celsius increase in temperature was associated with a 6 percent increase in headaches.

However, patients treated with fremanezumab did not have any problems with heat-related headaches. Fred Cohen, assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, said this study is the first to show that migraine drugs that block calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) can treat weather-related headaches.

If further studies are done in the future, this medicine can prove to be helpful for patients suffering from migraine due to weather. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, believed that weather and medicine are deeply related to each other. Al Peterlin, retired from the post of chief meteorologist in the US Department of Agriculture and co-author of the study, said that we are trying to prove that weather matters for human health. The findings of the study are to be presented at the 66th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society in San Diego, California over the weekend.
