Harmful metals are present in tampons, know how safe tampons are


There was a time when women used clothes during periods. Then gradually pads entered the market as a women’s period hygiene product. However, with changing times, apart from pads, menstrual cups and tampons also made their place in the market. These products are also used to absorb menstrual fluid.

But recently, according to a study, it has come to light that metals like arsenic and lead are present in tampons. After this study, FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) is expressing a lot of concern about tampon safety. The FDA believes that the public should know that before tampons can be legally sold in the United States, those products must meet FDA requirements. Additionally, the FDA will investigate whether those metals are affecting the woman’s vaginal lining or blood stream.

Actually, the author of this study, Jenny Shearstone, says that this study only found out what is present in the tampon, but it did not know whether those metals are affecting our health during the use of tampons or not.

Which metals were found in tampons in the study?

The study by Environment International, published in July, analyzed 30 tampons from 14 tampon brands and found that they contained measurable concentrations of the following metals:

  • barium
  • calcium
  • Cadmium
  • cobalt
  • Chromium
  • copper
  • iron
  • manganese
  • mercury
  • Out
  • lead
  • selenium
  • strontium
  • vanadium
  • zinc
