Durgesh Singh beautifully shows the stories of the middle class through shows like ‘Gullak’. he/she is an expert in weaving his/her experiences into his/her stories and believes that the real hero is the one who stands by the family. Durgesh believes that job is a golden cage and restlessness is necessary for creativity.

Writer Durgesh Singh of ‘Gullak’ fame, who tells stories of the middle class flowing like poetry, may be moving rapidly towards heights, but even today his/her socks get wet with sweat due to the uncertainty of his/her craft. he/she has made everyone feel a sense of belonging through his/her stories, which is a gift of his/her experience. By putting themselves in discomfort in jobs and building the ladder of success in life, they have shown that whatever you want, you will get it and you will get it in this life itself. These days he/she is in the news for his/her show Fisaddi. Recently, when I got a chance to understand his/her understanding of love, society, family and worldliness, a lot of things came out.

A person’s success does not depend only on his/her results.

I myself have been a below average student in studies, but when I heard about Javed Akhtar or Sachin Tendulkar, I came to know that they were never toppers. I want to say through ‘fisaddi’ that those whose marks are not coming, do not discard them. he/she is also a part of your society and family. Watch his/her journey. Goldie’s (Bhuvan Arora) journey in the show is interesting. he/she is very helpful but such people are rarely found in real society. Actually, goodness is now decreasing. Earlier it was taught that one should help but now such things are disappearing from our lives. Due to this the society is also getting spoiled, which we have no idea about. I also talked about the fact that because of Goldie, 20 people pass but he/she himself fails. There are posters in the campus declaring him/her to be the most lax. I want to say that results alone will not decide how successful a person is. The show is inspired by Munshi Premchandra’s ‘Bade Bhai Saheb’.

‘I am not Ravana but I will definitely be able to call myself Ram for a long time’

I am from Jaunpur near Prayagraj. I feel that if I talk about the problems of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, it will be a big victory for me as a writer. Most of the stories of Uttar Pradesh involving fighting, abuses, molestation and rape are shown. I thought why not tell the family’s story. Where the father wants to make his/her son an IAS instead of an engineer. he/she wants to end his/her burden by getting his/her daughter married early, even if she is not happy. There is a son, who wants to do better and is doing so, but due to not being able to get good marks in the world, the society and family have declared him/her rejected. I think my hero is the one who stands with the family. I believe in these bigger good stories. I want to tell stories like Rajkumar Hirani, Hrishikesh Mukherjee. I want to tell family stories of UP beyond crime because I will be able to tell not Ravana but Ram for a long time.

job is a golden cage

I did not want to be dull in writing, so I kept changing jobs every year. Constantly kept the inner writer alive in different ways, so that he/she does not get bored and tired. Jobs make you tired by bringing you into the comfort zone. As soon as you go into the comfort zone, creativity will start to fade away. For this restlessness is necessary. Job is a golden cage. I had left my last job as a creative director, where the salary was Rs 2 lakh. If you want to do the work of your mind, you will have to put yourself in discomfort. It is not that what you want will not happen. It will definitely happen and it will happen in this life.

I am showing my life experiences

Was rejected by FTII in 2010. After ‘Gullak’, when he/she called for a guest lecture, I told him/her from the stage that you had rejected me. Rejected because I had not seen world cinema. How will children who want to come from villages and small towns watch world cinema, when they do not have access? Once you give admission, then they will know about World Cinema and they will watch it. I did different jobs, from radio to advertising. Now looking back, I feel that these things have made me rich. What I am showing now is actually life experiences.

Mother and sister encouraged to read literature

Literature, books and stories came into my life because of women. Father did not support but mother and sister encouraged him/her to study literature. Later it seemed that the scope of society is such that a man has to be the provider. In such a situation, if there is a provider, whether man or woman, they will definitely come on board. If we want equality between men and women in the society then the label of provider will have to be removed. The one who gives money will gain authority. Even if it is father. You are not as afraid of your mother as you are of your father. Similarly, people are afraid of their bosses in jobs because that is where the salary comes from.

Love and worldliness do not go together

I feel that the middle class is so deep that not just one but even ten seasons fall short on it. One of my shows, Civil Lines, is coming in February, which was shot here in Lucknow. In this there is a boy, who loves a girl very much. The family members meet to organize the marriage, the girl’s mother says, ‘Son, build a house’. Then when he/she falls into the trap of cement, sand and gravel, love takes a backseat in his/her life and worldly matters come to the fore. When a man learns worldliness, he/she becomes irritable and not lovable. In fact, in worldly affairs there are lies, deceit, betrayal, deception, back-and-forth, EMI etc. In such a situation this man will not be able to give love. It is wrong to have expectations of love from such a man. Take love from him/her or worldly things. You can’t take both at the same time.

It is not necessary that every man buys a house and a car.

Being men, many things are imposed on them. They are providers but it is not necessary that every man can buy a house or car. This does not mean that he/she cannot be a good person. Society and family make his/her life short by imposing things on him/her. I am observing that the issues of heart attack and depression are increasing among men. I want to talk about their problems. It seems that most of the married men who are fulfilling their responsibilities are depressed because they have become bus providers. They are not getting love. Children, wife, parents, house-car-bike EMI, pressure at home, pressure from boss are reducing his/her life. These are my ideas, where I want to do something in the future.

I want to say thriller like poetry

I want to tell the crime story like Arshad Warsi’s film Sehar. This is the most beautiful film made on crime of UP. In this the crime is told like a poem. This is the definition of thriller and crime for me. When I see the work of the Coen brothers in Hollywood, I feel that even violence is poetic. If violence is banned then there is no difference between life and cinema. I am attracted to the word domination. I will definitely do something regarding this in the coming days. For me, dominance has never been a matter of struggle. It is important to understand the psychology of dominance. If you decode why someone wants control then it will become a poem and can be said in a better way.

It is necessary to sweat in socks

I think it’s important to sweat in your socks. I did ‘Gullak’. Then wrote ‘Fisaddi’ and co-produced it. Of ‘Civil Lines’, which is a little bigger than these. Now doing films, of which there are two big productions. For this, I am meeting big people, who are bigger than me not in position and money but in experience. Despite being a small town boy, I don’t get nervous when I sit in front of Karan Johar, Shraddha Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal or Ranveer Singh. I wonder whether he/she or the world will understand what is written. There is a dialogue from Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Maqbool – Balance of power is necessary, fear of water is necessary for fire. That’s what sweat in socks means. I have to be unsure about my craft. You will have to take suggestions from children to elders. Sweat in your socks means that you are in the mood to learn openly.
