Denied ticket by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for next month’s assembly elections in Gujarat, six party leaders, including a sitting MLA and four former legislators, filed nomination papers as independent candidates. Thursday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations for the elections to be held on 89 seats in the first phase. Elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.
Former BJP MLA and party’s tribal face Harshad Vasava, who filed his nomination as an independent candidate in Nandod in Narmada district a week ago, has not withdrawn his nomination and is contesting against the party’s official candidate. At the same time, former BJP MLA Arvind Ladani from Keshod in Junagadh district also did not withdraw his nomination. He was miffed after the Ladani party replaced him with the ticket for sitting MLA from Keshod, Devbhai Malam.
A sitting BJP MLA and two former MLAs on Thursday filed their nomination papers as independent candidates for the second phase of elections to be held on December 5. The last date for withdrawal of nominations for the second phase is November 21. Madhu Srivastava, a six-time MLA from Waghodia, was denied ticket this time by the BJP, following which she filed her nomination as an independent candidate. BJP has made Ashwin Patel its candidate from this seat.
Former BJP MLA Dinesh Patel filed his papers as an independent candidate from Padra seat in Vadodara district. At present, the BJP has given ticket to Chaitanya Singh Zala from this seat held by the Congress. Dhavalsinh Zala, a former Congress MLA from Byad seat who had joined the BJP, has filed his nomination as an independent as he was denied ticket by the BJP.Dhavalsinh Zala lost to Jashu Patel of the Congress in the 2020 bypoll. BJP leader Mavji Desai from Dhanera seat in Banaskantha district also filed nomination as an independent on Thursday after being denied ticket by the party. In 2017, he lost to Nathabhai Patel of INC.
