Green Jobs: Green jobs are increasing rapidly all over the world, salaries are also top class! What are the options for courses and jobs?

Issues and concerns regarding the environment have increased so much around the world that environmental science is expanding rapidly. Many fields are being added to environmental education and career options are also increasing. Global trends show that in the last 10 years, many courses related to environment science have been started in many universities. The career scope of environment science is quite wide in the country and the world. There are many job options in both government and private sector. Some of the subjects we focus on include Biology, Geology, Earth Science, Ecology, Physics, Chemistry. Courses are available at every level from PhD, Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Diploma and there are many green jobs associated with them.

Opportunities have increased with climate change

Environmental science has a wide range of career scopes, ranging from scientific research, engineering to policy analysis and education. As global environmental challenges intensify, the demand for professionals is increasing. GS Gadkoti, Professor of Environmental Science at Jawaharlal Nehru University, says, ‘Many years ago this subject was studied only in Botany or Zoology. Only biology students used to read it, who later went towards ecological science. But now environmental sciences departments have been opened everywhere in all the universities, either along with forestry or separately. Overall enrollment has increased significantly.

Ever since the Supreme Court made it mandatory for schools to teach not only biology but also non-biology students, its foundation was formed. With many challenges like global warming, climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, forest-water shortage, increasing population, this subject is spreading in many fields at the global level.

Green Jobs: In which fields are jobs available?

  • In academics, it offers teaching options from field schools to universities to public outreach.
  • This subject gives an opportunity to work in many organizations working in areas like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, disaster management, sustainable development.
  • Roles like environmental consultants working with industries, environmental policy analysts working with government agencies, conservation scientists, climate change analysts, sustainability managers with companies are associated with it.

JNU Professor GS Gadkoti says, ‘Climate change is a very big issue for every country. COPs are being held at the national and international level regarding climate change, in which the environmental experts participating are from different environmental organisations, NGOs and sectors. This means that there are opportunities to enhance career in all these fields, that too with good salary.

Green sector jobs increased by 200% in India

In the last five years, job roles in the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) sector have increased by more than 200% in India. Sustainability, resource management, how business and organizations can contribute to the environment, and this is what this sector focuses on.
