Green card hassle in America is over, this special scheme will provide permanent residency, registration started

US Green Card: Getting a US Green Card is a very challenging task. Every year the government issues only 6,75,000 green cards, whereas the number of people applying for it is 3.4 crore. Every year lakhs of people apply and the backlog of green cards increases. Currently its backlog is in crores. However, a special scheme is run in America, which not only provides visa for that country but also provides opportunities for green card.
This scheme is known as the Diversity Visa Lottery (Green Card Lottery). Online registration for the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery for the financial year 2026 has started. Foreign nationals who want to be a part of the lottery can apply till November 5, 2024. Under this scheme, 55,000 green card numbers are given by randomly selecting them. The lottery results will be declared in May 2025. If your name appears in the lottery, you can apply for a green card from October 1, 2025.

What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?

The Diversity Visa Lottery (Green Card Lottery) is a US government program under which 55,000 immigrant visas are made available each year. These visas are given to the US by randomly selecting people from countries with historically low immigration rates. This is a unique opportunity for individuals and families to obtain permanent residence in the United States (green card), even if they do not have employment in the United States.

Who is eligible for the scheme?

The DV lottery is for people from countries that have historically low rates of immigration to the US. Let us know which country’s people are eligible under this.

• The countries from which most people come to America are not eligible under this scheme.
• This year Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including the mainland and Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Venezuela and Vietnam. People from are not eligible.
• Individuals born in Macau SAR and Taiwan can participate.
• People who cannot register because their country of birth is excluded. They can apply through their spouse, but their spouse must be born in a country that is eligible under the scheme. In some cases this applies to parents also.
• The applicant should have at least high school education or two years of work experience in the last year.

How to register?

• Submit an online form and a digital photo on the official DV Lottery website.
• The applicant can also include his/her wife and children in the application.
• Only one application is allowed per person.
• The rules of the US State Department will have to be followed. Incorrect entry may result in disqualification.
• Once the application is accepted, you will also get a confirmation number to check the status.

How are lottery winners chosen?

The Ministry of External Affairs selects lottery winners through a computer system. The result will be announced on May 3, 2025. The results can also be viewed on the DV Lottery website. Applicants can check whether they have been selected or not by visiting the official DV website and entering their confirmation number. The Ministry of External Affairs does not inform the applicants about their selection through mail, email, fax or phone. Therefore the website is the only source of information.
