New Delhi: Amrish Puri used to dream of becoming an actor since childhood. He gave his first audition at the age of 22, but could not be selected because of his voice and looks. After a few years, at the age of 40, he tried to enter the film industry. No one could dissuade him, because he was born only to become a villain in films.
Amrish Puri worked in more than 450 films and won many awards for his brilliant acting. When he appeared on the screen, the audience’s attention shifted away from the handsome actor towards him. He played interesting roles in memorable films like ‘Vidhata’, ‘Mr India’, ‘Shakti’ and ‘Jung’. He used to charge more fees than the lead actor at his time. Amrish Puri was the cousin of iconic singer KL Saigal. According to media reports, KL Sehgal’s mother was the real sister of Amrish Puri’s father S Nihal Singh Puri. Leaving 22 years old government job came to films
While working in Amrish Puri’s insurance company, he met theater director and drama teacher Ibrahim Alkaji, who asked him to try his luck in theatre. Initially, Amrish Puri used to do other works like cleaning the stage while learning acting. He gradually started showing his acting skills, due to which he got his big break in the film ‘Prem Pujari’ in 1970. After this he decided to leave his 22 years old government job.

Mogambo’s character in the film ‘Mr India’ is still fresh in the hearts of the audience. It is said that Amrish Puri locked himself in a room for 20 days to get into this character. Not only this, the actor also showed his mettle in Hollywood. He worked in legendary film director Steven Spielberg’s films ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Temple of Doom’. Steven Spielberg also considered Amrish Puri as his favorite villain.

When Amrish Puri was working with Nasir Hussain, Aamir Khan was asked to take care of Amrish Puri, but Aamir was repeatedly making mistakes, which enraged Amrish Puri and scolded him in front of everyone. Although later Amrish Puri apologized to Aamir Khan for his behaviour. Amrish Puri was last seen in the film ‘Kisna’, after which he died in 2005. He was married to Urmila Devekar, with whom he had two children, Rajeev Amrish Puri and Namrata.
