Government takes action on bomb threats to flights, instructions to social media sites – remove fake messages otherwise…


New Delhi: The Central Government has taken a strict stance on the continuous fake bomb threats being received by Indian flights. The Union Ministry of Information Technology (IT Ministry) has issued an advisory in this regard. In this, social media companies have been instructed to remove fake bomb threat messages from their platforms and stop its spread. The ministry has ordered social media sites X and Meta to immediately remove such messages. Due to these fake threats, airline services are being affected. Along with this, the safety of passengers is also at risk. Fake flight threats cause financial loss.

Till now around 400 planes have received fake threats

In the last two weeks, about 400 different flights of Indian Airlines have received such fake bomb threats. In this matter, the government has now warned social media companies like X (earlier Twitter) and Meta. The government has said that these companies should take strict steps to stop such rumours.

Center instructions to X and Meta

In the advisory issued by the IT Ministry, it was said that due to the option of ‘Forward/Re-Share/Re-Post/Re-Tweet’ on social media platforms, such fake bomb threats are encouraged. These are mostly misinformation which is disrupting public order, operations of airlines and safety of airline passengers on a large scale.

Social media companies should take these steps

The government further said that it is the duty of social media companies to immediately remove such misinformation which affects the security and law and order of the country. Citing the IT Rules, 2021, the government said that social media companies will have to ensure that their platforms are not used by anyone to spread illegal or false information. If this happens then they will have to take immediate action.

Strong action will be taken against those caught on fake bomb threat

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu had on Friday assured that the government is committed to taking strict action against those making fake bomb threats. Earlier this week, Naidu said the government was planning to take legislative action to deal with incidents of bomb threats to airlines, including placing those making such threats on a ‘no-fly’ list .

The government had earlier this week also reprimanded social media platforms ‘Meta’ and ‘X’ and asked them to share data about fake bomb threats sent to airlines. Airlines have suffered losses worth crores of rupees due to fake threats.
