Controversy over Hindu names of hijackers in web series
The ‘IC 814’ series starring veterans like Vijay Verma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and Arvind Swami is based on the infamous hijacking of Indian Airlines flight number 814 in 1999. The makers claim that they have based this unforgettable incident in Indian aviation history on the basis of facts. But there has been a controversy over giving Hindu names to two hijackers in the series.
There were 180 people on board IC 814, the flight was to go from Kathmandu to Delhi
This plane coming from Kathmandu, Nepal to Delhi was hijacked a few minutes after takeoff. There were a total of 180 people on board this plane along with the crew. After hijacking the plane, it was first taken to Amritsar, then Lahore, then to Dubai and then to Kandahar.
The names of the hijackers in the web series are Bhola and Shankar
In the web series, the four hijackers are shown with codenames Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. Whereas in the real incident, the terrorists did not use the names Bhola and Shankar. People on social media say that the makers have deliberately chosen Hindu names and presented the facts incorrectly. This controversy has sparked a heated debate in the internet world.
The series is based on the book ‘Flight into Fear: The Captain’s Story’
This web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ is based on the book ‘Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story’ written by journalist Srinjoy Chaudhary and the pilot of the hijacked plane, Captain Devi Sharan.
