Goldie Brar, Tahawwur Rana… 61 extradition requests of India are pending in America for two decades, when will the action be taken?


New Delhi: India has requested the extradition of 61 people from the US in the last 20 years, but in most cases no action has been taken. In some of these cases, despite repeated appeals, no response has been received. This information came to light when America itself has accused an Indian officer Vikas Yadav of conspiring to murder Khalistani separatist GS Pannu.

5 new requests sent to America

According to information received by our associate newspaper ‘Economic Times’, famous names like Goldie Brar and Tahawwur Hussain Rana are also included in the pending requests for extradition. Of these, Goldie Brar faces serious charges like running a terrorist gang, murder and extortion. At the same time, Tahawwur Rana was involved in the conspiracy of 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack. Interestingly, India has sent five new extradition requests to the US this year. One of them, Harjot Singh, faces charges like waging war against the country, providing money for terrorism and being a member of a terrorist organization.

Appeal for two decades, no action till now

Others against whom extradition requests have been sent this year include Anmol Bishnoi, Nelson K. Kambatha, James Larry Alford (outraging the modesty of women) and Sahil Kumar (fake passport case). Apart from all this, 26 extradition requests are also pending from Canada. India has also shared information with Canada about several criminal groups, including the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. However, no action has been taken so far. This information has been given by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Tahawwur Rana wanted for 26/11 attack

Tahawwur Rana, wanted in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was arrested in the US in June 2020 on the request of India. his/her bail plea was rejected in July 2020. In 2023, the District Court for the Central District of California stayed Rana’s extradition so that his/her appeal could be heard by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Tahawwur Hussain Rana was involved in the conspiracy of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. America had informed India about the court proceedings in the case of Tahawwur Hussain Rana a few months ago and had assured that it would continue to provide updates in this regard.

America asked for information on Goldie Brar

Goldie Brar, who is accused of being the mastermind behind terrorist killings and extortion cases in several parts of India. he/she is also wanted in the murder case of Sidhu Moosewala. According to sources, the first extradition request against Brar was sent in January 2023. After this, India appealed several times, but America did not respond. However, in September this year, America has asked for more information about Goldie Brar.

26 extradition requests from Canada also

Also in 2023, India also sought extradition from the US for four people wanted on charges of fraud and rape. Apart from these, an extradition request against Nirav Modi’s wife, Ami N Modi, on money laundering charges is pending since 2020. America has also been reminded in this matter this month. Apart from the US, India has shared 26 extradition requests with Canada and security information on gangs, including the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, but no action has been taken so far, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
