‘Go to Pakistan’, once Payal Kapadia had to face trouble in FTII, now hoisted the flag in Cannes

Payal Kapadia’s name is in discussion these days. he/she has brought glory to the country at Cannes. Filmmaker Payal has won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. However, Palay, who graduated from FTII, was once called ‘anti-national’ and today she has become the pride of the country. However, it took him/her 9 years to do so. That’s why everyone is talking about him/her. In 2015, he/she protested for 139 days when Gajendra Chauhan was made FTII Chairman. Also faced slogans of ‘Go to Pakistan’. Along with 34 other alumni, Payal Kapadia is fighting a legal battle in a case filed by the then director of the institute, Prashant Patharabe, in which he/she has been accused of They were involved in surrounding him/her and vandalizing his/her office.

But after winning Cannes, there was no hatred in Payal’s words. he/she could only see the joy of victory. Which he/she shared with fellow filmmakers of India. ‘It’s a great feeling to receive this award, because there are so many good films from India as well as ours, and we feel part of a big family of filmmakers. This time we have three films from FTII directors. My FTII batchmate Maisam Ali’s film In Retreat is the first Indian entry in the ACID sidebar of Cannes.

Payal’s film on the 2015 FTII movement also won the Cannes Laurel. Additionally, FTII student Chidanand Naik’s film titled ‘Sunflowers Were the First to Know’ has won an award in the La Cinef section. Payal’s batchmates and other alumni recall that the 2015 protest was ‘against the appointment of people who had no achievements in film production’ but were included in the Governing Council of FTII, allegedly for political reasons.

Payal credits her success to her teachers and students at FTII, ‘It’s also a great place to meet people who love cinema. My batchmates played an important role in shaping my thoughts. At FTII, we got to see films from all over the world and this exposure helped me in making my film.
