Celiac disease is an abnormal reaction of the immune system to the consumption of gluten. This protein called gluten is found in bread, biscuits, pasta and many grains. In this, the immune system considers healthy cells as bad and starts producing antibodies against them. Due to this, the problem of swelling and irritation starts in the surface of the intestines. Normally the surface of the intestines is covered with millions of tiny tube-like growths called villi.

Villi work to increase the surface of the intestines, which helps digest food more effectively. In case of celiac disease, the villi become weak and their ability to help in digestion is also affected. As a result, the intestine fails to digest the nutrients from food and symptoms of celiac disease start appearing.
