GK: The President of India who had to go from house to house giving tuitions to support his/her family


Recently, Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 5th September across the country. This day is dedicated to the efforts of teachers, the birthday of Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who ignited the spirit of education. Radhakrishnan, who held the highest post in the country, faced many difficulties. he/she gave home tuitions to run the household expenses but never gave up his/her honesty towards education. he/she was deeply attached to his/her work. he/she was well aware of the condition of teachers, which is why he/she advised to celebrate his/her birthday as Teachers’ Day.

How did September 5 become Teachers Day?

Actually, once some students had come to meet India’s first Vice President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The students had told him/her, Sir, we want to celebrate your birthday. On this, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan remained silent for some time. he/she told the students, ‘I will be happy if Teacher’s Day is celebrated instead of my birthday.’ he/she himself was a teacher, and wanted teachers to be respected. In this way, the tradition of celebrating his/her birthday on September 5 as Teacher’s Day started.

Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tiruttani village of Tamil Nadu. he/she belonged to a very simple family. But, his/her education and teaching methods made him/her very famous among the students. Radhakrishnan did his/her early education from the village. After this he/she obtained a graduate degree. he/she dedicated most of his/her life to education and philosophical thoughts. Completed post graduation in philosophy.

During this time, he/she got a job to teach in college. he/she was also getting a lot of interest in teaching the students. However, it became a challenge for Radhakrishnan, who came from an ordinary family, to manage the household expenses. Since his/her family was big and his/her father had retired. The money he/she got from the college job was not enough for the household expenses. The responsibility of the house was on Radhakrishnan’s shoulders. To fight this challenge, Radhakrishnan started giving tuition from house to house. The family’s household expenses started being met from the fees he/she got from tuition.

Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts had a great influence on Radhakrishnan’s life. Radhakrishnan also considered him/her as his/her source of inspiration. As a professor, he/she taught students for a long time at Madras Presidency College, Calcutta University. Apart from being a teacher, he/she was also a good writer. he/she also wrote books named ‘Indian Philosophy’, ‘Bhagavad Gita’ and ‘The Hindu View of Life’. When India became independent, he/she became the first Vice President of India in the year 1952. In the year 1954, he/she was awarded the Bharat Ratna. After this, in the year 1962, he/she became the second President of India.
