According to the report, by 2040, Germany will need an average of 2,88,000 migrant workers every year. With this, the number of working people in the country will remain stable. If the labor participation of women and the elderly does not increase in Germany, 3,68,000 immigrants will be needed every year. In the early 2000s, on average, fewer migrants were admitted to Germany each year. But in the last decade, conflicts in Syria and Ukraine have drawn some 600,000 migrants to Germany each year.

Increasing pressure on labor market

Germany’s aging population is set to see a large number of retirees in the coming years. This includes people born in the Baby Boomer (people born between 1946 and 1964) generation. Because of this there will be a big decline in the working population in Germany. If the solution to this problem is not found then the economic growth rate of the country will slow down. If this happens, the German economy will also be directly affected.

“The retirement of baby boomers will pose major challenges to the labor market in the coming years,” Suzanne Schultz, a migration expert at the Bertelsmann Stiftung, told Bloomberg. “Immigration is necessary to meet future labor demand, even if the country’s Workforce participation should be maximum.” To put it in simple language, apart from hiring its own citizens, Germany will now have to give jobs to foreigners as well.
