Yasin Malik submitted an affidavit in the UAPA tribunal. Malik wrote that he/she had given up violence and weapons 30 years ago i.e. in 1994 itself. Now he/she has become a Gandhian. Malik further wrote that he/she abandoned the path of violence and became a Gandhian in 1994 as a means of achieving the JKLF-Y’s objective of establishing a “united independent Kashmir”. Yasin’s affidavit was released last month and was quoted in the UAPA tribunal’s order published in the Gazette on Thursday. The decision to declare JKLF-Y an ‘illegal association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) of 1967 was further upheld.

Yasin’s hands are stained with the blood of airmen
Yasin Malik founded JKLF-Y in 1988. he/she is the main accused in the murder case of four Indian Air Force personnel in Rawalpura, Srinagar in 1990. Malik was identified as the main shooter earlier this year. he/she was also given rigorous imprisonment for life in May 2022 in a terrorism financing case investigated by the NIA.

Yasin claimed in his/her affidavit to the tribunal that he/she was assured by “various state authorities” in the early nineties that they would resolve the Kashmir dispute through a meaningful dialogue and once they initiated a unilateral ceasefire, So all the cases against him/her and JKLF-Y will be withdrawn. The tribunal order records that thereafter, a unilateral ceasefire was declared by him/her and his/her organization in 1994 and as a result, he/she was granted bail in 32 pending militancy related cases under TADA and thereafter, from 1994 to 2018. Till now no case was pursued against him/her as per the ceasefire agreement.

Alleged by the NIA that he/she is implicated in over 89 stone pelting cases following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani in 2016, Yasin said he/she was in police custody during the violence. Yasin, however, claimed that JKLF-Y operatives were in limbo in Kashmir since it was first banned in 2019. She acknowledged that its international branches in more than 50 countries are functional and supporting the cause of the organization. This belies their submission that there is no illegal activity by JKLF-Y and its cadres since the 2019 ban.
