Mumbai Gautam Gambhir, who made the Kolkata Knight Riders team champion in the recent season of the Indian Premier League, is leading in the race to become the coach of the Indian team. Former captain Sourav Ganguly, supporting the appointment of an Indian to the post of head coach of the national team, said on Saturday that if Gautam Gambhir has applied for it, he/she will prove to be a good coach.

Ganguly said, “I am in favour of the Indian coach. If Gambhir has applied for this post then he/she will prove to be a good coach.”

Kolkata Knight Riders recently won the IPL title after 10 years under the guidance of former batsman Gambhir, who was a member of India’s World Cup winning team. Gambhir is considered to be the frontrunner to become the Indian coach. Current coach Rahul Dravid will leave his/her post after the T20 World Cup. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah also recently indicated that an Indian coach would be given priority.

Shah had said, “There is an intense process to find a suitable coach for the national team. We are focusing on individuals who have a good understanding of the Indian cricket structure and who have gone through it.”

Ganguly also said that India is a strong contender for the title in the T20 World Cup being played in America and West Indies. he/she said, “India has a very good chance of winning the World Cup. India has to play like a T20 team. There is a lot of talent in this team.”
