As soon as Gokulashtami ends, preparations for Ganeshotsav begin. Everyone is busy in these preparations. Cleaning of the house, painting, arranging rangolis bring gaiety to the environment. The markets are filled with various decorative items, sweets, fruits, colorful flowers.

Matoli is a traditional form of decoration in Goa during Ganeshotsav. Adorned with many fruits and flowers, this Matoli is decorated on the head of Bappa seated in the makhar. Matoli is a wooden frame made in square shape. Its size is decided according to the convenience of everyone. A day before Chaturthi, various types of fruits and flowers are brought from the nearby forests to decorate this frame.

Then it is decorated attractively on a frame and made into a Matoli and tied on the Makhhar for decoration. Various wild plants, fruits and flowers like Ghaghriya, Kangla, Kudefal, Aatki, Dhotra, Rui are tied in it. These plants rich in medicinal properties are beneficial for the physical and mental health of humans. Along with this, Matoli also includes wild fruits like betel nut, coconut, cucumber, chibud, guava, apple, banana, chitpam.

Goans traditionally enjoy a variety of sweet and savoury dishes served as prasad during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, including modaks (Lord Ganesha’s favourite) newara (karanji), a sweet made from gram flour along with semolina, coconut, dry fruits and fruits. Similarly, homemade sweets like gram and semolina laddus, coconut barfi, chakli, shankarpali and chivda are also made. There are also the traditional ukdi modaks, panchkhady and puran made modaks. Nowadays chocolate modaks are also available.
