When was Bapu’s picture printed on notes for the first time?

Mahatma Gandhi’s image first appeared on Indian currency notes in 1969 to commemorate his/her 100th birth anniversary. Subsequently, in 1996 the Reserve Bank of India issued a new series of notes bearing the image of Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, by the 1990s, RBI noticed that the technology of making fake notes had become very advanced. Technologies like digital printing, scanning, photography and xerography made it easier to make fake notes. RBI believed that inanimate objects were easier to copy than human faces. Therefore RBI decided to put the picture of Mahatma Gandhi on the new notes. Gandhiji was chosen because of his/her national appeal. Many new security features were also added to the new notes. These included Windows Security Thread, Incognito Image and Intaglio features for the visually impaired. After that RBI once again issued new notes in 2016. These notes were called ‘Mahatma Gandhi New Series’. These notes also have Gandhiji’s picture.
