Adulteration of food items is very common in India. In order to earn more profit, dangerous chemicals and things are mixed in food items, which can cause serious harm to health.

Recently you must have seen news of dangerous chemicals in the spices of two top spice brands of the country. Many of their spices were banned in many countries because they contained high amounts of cancer causing elements. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the organization that checks the quality of food items in the country, has come into action after this incident.

A few days after this news, the officials of the organization took samples of some food items including paneer from some shops on the Dehradun Char Dham Yatra route and checked the quality. During this, they also destroyed about 5 quintals of fake and spoiled paneer. Obviously, fake paneer, which can cause death, was being made here.

Fake paneer is made by mixing milk powder and water, which is later set with lemon juice and vinegar. Then palm oil is added to it to make it look smooth and shiny.

Try mashing some paneer with your clean hands. Fake paneer uses low-fat milk powder, so it will break when pressure is applied. Real paneer will not break easily.

Iodine tincture can be used to find out whether paneer is real or fake. Heat water in a pan and add paneer to it and boil it. After it cools down, add a few drops of iodine to it. If the colour of the paneer turns blue, then understand that it is fake.

For this test, boil the paneer in water and after it cools down, add some tur dal powder to it and leave it for 10 minutes. If the color of the paneer turns light red, then it is possible that detergent or urea has been mixed in the paneer.

Especially before buying loose paneer, always taste a small piece of it. If it feels chewy or has too much sourness, then it may be fake paneer.

You can also use soybean powder just like the tur dal test mentioned above. Boil the paneer, cool it and then add some soybean powder to it. If the color of the paneer turns light red, it may be a sign that detergent or urea has been added to the paneer.
