Recently a Porsche car ran over two people in Pune
11 days before this incident, a drunk and speeding Porsche car allegedly killed two IT professionals in Pune, Maharashtra. Anish Avadhiya and Ashwini Costa died in this accident. The Porsche car was being driven by a 17-year-old teenager in a drunken state. The car, running at a reckless speed, hit the motorcycle of both the IT professionals.
An accident happened with a luxury car in Noida too
Accidents caused by speeding cars are also fatal for the vehicle riders. Two days before this accident, a speeding BMW car hit an e-rickshaw in Noida at 6 am on May 16, killing two people, including a nurse, and injuring three. After this, on the morning of May 26, a speeding Audi car hit a 64-year-old man in the same city of Uttar Pradesh. The elderly Janak Dev Shah died on the spot. Shah, a resident of Gijhor village in Sector 53, was going to get milk. Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh includes Noida and Greater Noida. Last year, 1,176 road accidents took place in Gautam Buddha Nagar, in which 470 people died and 858 were injured.
These accident statistics are frightening
According to official figures, 437 people died and 856 were injured in road accidents in the district in the year 2022. According to the report of the Ministry of Transport, 4.61 lakh road accidents occurred across the country in 2022, in which 1.68 lakh people were killed and 4.43 lakh people were injured. Out of the 1.68 lakh people who lost their lives, 1.19 lakh died in accidents caused by speeding. In August last year, a Rolls Royce Phantom collided with a petrol tanker on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Nuh, Haryana, killing two people. The truck was coming from the wrong direction and the speed of the limousine was around 230 kmph. Both the people in the truck were killed, while the people in the car were injured.
‘Changes in the country’s licensing system are necessary’
Regarding the increasing number of road accidents involving luxury cars, Piyush Tiwari, founder of NGO Save Life Foundation, said that this problem is arising due to the flawed licensing system in the country. he/she said, ‘If you have an LMV license, you can drive anything from a car with an 800 cc engine to a high-power super car. Improvement in the licensing system is necessary. License should be given on the basis of driving ability.’
In November 2022, former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and his/her friend Jehangir Pandole died in a road accident. The two were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz SUV driven by Jehangir’s wife Anahita Pandole. According to reports, the car was speeding at over 100 kmph and it collided with a road divider. Motor vehicle accidents have not spared pedestrians either. According to the Road Accidents in India 2022 report, 10,160 pedestrians have died in 20,513 accidents on national highways.
