From Article 370 to electoral bonds, new CJI Sanjeev Khanna gave these 5 important decisions while being a judge of the Supreme Court.

New Delhi: After the retirement of CJI Chandrachud, today Justice Sanjeev Khanna took oath as the new Chief Justice of the country. After which he/she has now become the 51st Chief Justice of the country. Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna has advocacy in his/her blood. Actually, his/her father Devraj Khanna was a judge of Delhi High Court while his/her uncle Hansraj Khanna was a judge of the Supreme Court. he/she also decided to make his/her career in the same direction and did LLB from Campus Law Center of Delhi University in 1983. After this, Sanjeev Khanna started practicing law from Tis Hazari Court of Delhi. After that, in the year 2005, he/she became a judge of Delhi High Court. VVPAT verification issue

The division bench led by the country’s new Chief Justice had given its verdict on the petition of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), in which ADR had demanded that the votes be completely verified through VVPAT. The division bench led by Justice Sanjeev Khanna had rejected this petition. During that time Justice Khanna had said that he/she wanted to put on record all the security measures adopted by the ECI to ensure free and fair elections. The existing system ensures quick (instant), mistake-free and glitch-free counting of votes.

Decision given on the issue of Electoral Bond also

Justice Khanna was also part of the bench that delivered the verdict on the electoral bond scheme. In February 2024, Justice Khanna was part of a five-judge bench that declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional. This decision was taken due to transparency and potential corruption concerns. Justice Khanna rejected the argument that donor confidentiality applies to donations made through banking channels. he/she said that the bank officials handling the bonds are aware of the identity of the donors.

Consent given in repealing Article 370

The decision to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir was challenged in the Supreme Court last year. At that time, a bench of five benches including Justice Sanjeev Khanna had upheld the decision to remove Article 370. he/she believed that removing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir would not threaten the principles of India’s federal structure.

Important decision given in RTI case

Justice Sanjeev Khanna had also given an important decision in the year 2019 on the issue of judicial independence and transparency. The judgment held that the office of the Chief Justice of India could be subject to information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Along with privacy of judges, there should also be transparency in every case.

Decision was also given on divorce

Justice Sanjeev Khanna had also given a big verdict in a divorce case in May last year. In that decision, it was said that under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court can directly give the decision of divorce.

Kejriwal granted interim bail

In May this year, a bench led by Justice Khanna had granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal for three weeks to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. Two months later, the bench granted interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in the ED case.
