The new bill will raise the official retirement age from 62 to 64 after it is passed.
Intercity and computer train services likely to be severely disrupted due to protests
From 2027 people will have to work for 43 years to get full pension
Paris, The new pension scheme included in the reform programs being carried out by President Emmanuel Macron has now become the cause of nationwide demonstrations. According to a report in ‘France 24’, French unions staged a massive strike and protest on Thursday against plans to raise the retirement age. The new bill will increase the official retirement age from 62 to 64 once it is passed by the parliament and will also increase the minimum service period required for full pension.
Intercity and commuter train services are expected to be badly disrupted due to these demonstrations. Many schools and other public services will remain closed. One in five flights has been canceled at Orly airport in Paris. Also, only two driverless lines in the Paris Metro will operate normally. Large demonstrations of thousands are expected in Paris and other cities, where ultra-left “Black Bloc” infiltrators are also expected to carry out violence.
Now it is necessary to work for 43 years
Under proposals outlined earlier this month by Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne, from 2027 people will have to work 43 years to get a full pension, up from 42 now. The plan, which is being described as an important measure to protect France’s share-out pension system, has been rejected by the people. The reform is proving deeply unpopular among the public according to IFOP polls – 68% said they are opposed. French media have reported that police are planning for 550,000 to 750,000 protesters, including 50,000 to 80,000 in Paris. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Wednesday that 10,000 policemen would be on alert in view of the demonstrations.
