For the first time, Nepal Army’s band will also be included in the Army Day Parade.

New Delhi : For the first time, Nepal Army band will also participate in the parade on Indian Army Day. Till now no band or contingent from any other country had ever participated in the Army Day Parade. According to sources, this team of Nepal Army Band will have 33 members. This team of Nepal Army will reach Pune on Friday. This time the Army Day Parade is being held in Pune. 15th January is Army Day.

Nepal does not want to send its youth

About two and a half years ago, when the method of recruitment in the Indian Army changed and the recruitment of Agniveers started through the Agneepath Scheme, ever since then Gorkhas of Nepali origin have not been recruited in the Indian Army. Nepal does not want to send its youth under the Agneepath scheme. Nepal wants that Nepali Gorkhas should be taken into the army permanently as before and not as Agniveer. However, there has been no progress from the governments of both the countries regarding this. But relations between Nepal Army and Indian Army continue as before.

Army Chief had gone to Nepal

Only a few months ago, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi had gone to Nepal and after that Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel came to India. The armies of both the countries give the title of Honorary General to each other’s Army Chief. Both the countries also provide courses to each other’s soldiers in their prestigious military institutions. Last year alone, more than 300 soldiers of Nepal Army were trained in India.

In this the focus was on counter insurgency, leadership development and peacekeeping. Both countries are important partners in enhancing their military capabilities. India-Nepal conduct joint military exercises every year. Its name is Exercise Surya Kiran. This promotes better coordination and cooperation between the two armies. The exercise focuses on counter-terrorism operations, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

Ex-servicemen strengthen the bonds of relationships

Former soldiers of the Indian Army strengthen the link between India and Nepal Army. Nepal has a large population of ex-servicemen of the Indian Army. Nepal is home to more than 88,000 Indian Army veterans, who contribute actively to various sectors such as education, healthcare and rural development. There are 7 regiments of Gorkha in the Indian Army.

At the time of independence, there were 10 Gorkha regiments, they were divided between India and Britain. 6 came to India, 3 went to Britain and one was disbanded. After independence, the Indian Army created another Gorkha regiment. Nepalese Gorkhas have been joining the Indian Army till the implementation of Agneepath Scheme.
