First TMC and now SP… Is Congress becoming weak in India alliance?

New Delhi: Does Congress’s hold on the India Alliance of opposition parties, formed just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, seem to be weakening? These questions arose because first Mamata Banerjee’s party TMC showed an eye to Congress. Now the attitude of Samajwadi Party also seems to have changed. This is because the issue of Adani was raised by Congress in the winter session of Parliament on Wednesday. The party along with other opposition parties walked out of the House. he/she also protested regarding this issue in the House. However, TMC as well as Samajwadi Party MPs were not seen in it. After this, questions arose whether Congress’s hold in the India alliance was weakening?

How Congress is weakening in India alliance

A day earlier, a demand was raised from Trinamool Congress to make Mamata Banerjee the face of the India alliance. There was a counterattack from the Congress on this. Congress MP Manickam Tagore termed this demand as a joke. However, the demand of TMC to declare Mamta as the face of India alliance is being advanced rapidly. Now TMC took a stand different from Congress on Adani issue also. During this period, it seemed as if the Samajwadi Party had given up on the Congress.

TMC-SP showed their attitude in Parliament

This discussion started because on Wednesday, opposition MPs led by Congress walked out of the House on the issue of Adani. When they protested in the Parliament complex, not a single leader of SP and TMC attended the demonstration. During the protest in Parliament, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, MP Priyanka Gandhi, RJD’s Misa Bharti, Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh and Shiv Sena UBT MP Arvind Sawant participated. However, Samajwadi Party and TMC MPs were not seen in this protest.

SP also raised questions on Rahul Gandhi’s Sambhal tour

This is not the only reason for discussion about SP’s distance from Congress. Even on the Sambhal issue, the opinions of both the parties do not seem to match. This was visible when Rahul Gandhi left from Delhi on Wednesday to go to Sambhal. However, due to restrictions of the UP government, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had to return from Ghazipur border in Delhi near Ghaziabad. When Samajwadi Party was questioned on this issue, they raised questions on the decision of the Congress leadership. On behalf of SP, it was said that when the Sambhal issue was not raised in the Parliament, then what was the use of going there. Due to this, there were signs of Congress becoming isolated.

Kejriwal’s ‘Ekal Chalo’ also discussed in the alliance

On the other hand, when Arvind Kejriwal also followed Mamata Banerjee’s path, Shiv Sena (UBT) said that Congress should take steps for opposition unity. Shiv Sena (UBT) reacted to AAP’s announcement of contesting Delhi elections on its own. At the same time, in view of TMC maintaining distance from Congress in West Bengal, the country’s oldest party was asked to take steps for opposition unity. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party, in an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, stressed that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal needs to be convinced to remain a part of the ‘India’ alliance.

Shiv Sena (UBT) advises Congress to introspect

Saamna’s editorial said that in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is trying to do politics by keeping distance from Congress. Now Kejriwal is also going on the same path. In this regard, Congress needs to introspect and take steps for unity (of the opposition). It was also said in the editorial that it is necessary to have AAP in the anti-BJP alliance. Aam Aadmi Party is no longer a regional party as it has expanded to other states as well. In such a situation, it is necessary to have it in the India alliance.

Congress’s ‘hands’ became stronger after Lok Sabha elections

Now it remains to be seen what steps the Congress leadership takes to strengthen its hold in the India alliance. The question is also that the way Congress performed best in the last decade in the 2024 general elections, it had an impact on the morale of the party workers. The party’s hold in the opposition India alliance also seemed to be getting stronger.

However, after the crushing defeat of Congress in Haryana and then Maharashtra elections, the party has suffered a major setback. Now the question is how Congress makes a comeback. Now there are elections in Delhi and Bihar next year. It will be interesting to see whether Congress will be able to present its strong claim in these elections?
