There is lack of rain in some parts, while in some parts it rained so much that the crops got washed away. This has had a profound impact on paddy production in the Kharif season. Because of which the government is facing difficulties regarding rice this year. The government has already stopped the export of non-basmati rice. Meanwhile, the farmers of the country have definitely reduced the tension of the government to some extent. The total area under all kharif crops increased marginally to 979.88 lakh hectare till August 11 in the current kharif season as against 972.58 lakh hectare in the same period last year.
Kharif area increased in the country
So far in the current Kharif season, the area under paddy sowing has increased by five percent to reach 328.22 lakh hectare. But still the three major producing states of eastern India, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Assam are still lagging behind. Paddy, the major kharif crop, was sown in 312.80 lakh hectares in the same period a year ago, according to agriculture ministry data. However, as of August 11, pulses, oilseeds, cotton and jute/mesta were lagging behind in terms of area sown in the kharif season.
- The area sown to paddy in Odisha has come down to 18.97 lakh hectare as compared to 20.35 lakh hectare in the same season last year.
- Paddy has been sown in 6.86 lakh hectares as against 8.28 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh
- In Assam too, the area under cultivation has come down to 14.92 lakh hectare from 16.25 lakh hectare earlier.
status of other cereals
- The area under coarse cereals has increased marginally to 171.36 lakh hectare from 167.73 lakh hectare in the same period last year.
- The area under pulses remained low at 113.07 lakh hectare, as compared to 122.77 lakh hectare a year ago.
- The area under oilseeds cultivation decreased marginally to 183.33 lakh hectare as compared to the earlier 184.61 lakh hectare.
- Among cash crops, the area sown to sugarcane increased marginally to 56.06 lakh hectare till August 11 this kharif season from 55.20 lakh hectare in the same period last year.
- The area sown under cotton decreased marginally to 121.28 lakh hectare as compared to 122.53 lakh hectare,
- Sowing of Jute/Mesta has also come down to 6.56 lakh hectare from 6.95 lakh hectare earlier.
