Fact Check: Was the FIR for theft of bike of UP policeman registered after a week? Know the whole truth


New Delhi: Police work is very difficult. Maintaining law and order and protecting people, all this is part of the duty of the police. But, often the police become victims of criticism. One such case is related to Fatehpur Police of UP, in which it is being claimed that the department took a week to file the report of only one policeman. However, in the investigation of the Vigilant team, the truth of this claim turned out to be something else.

What is the claim on social media?

Regarding this matter, UP Congress wrote a post on its X (Twitter) handle on 27 November 2024. The post said, ‘The bike of a UP policeman posted in Mahoba was stolen from Fatehpur. After a lot of pleading, an FIR was registered at the behest of the CO, a week after the incident. A video of the victim policeman has also been attached with this post, in which he/she is narrating his/her complaint.

What is the truth of the claim?

To investigate this matter, the alert team first checked the X-handle of Fatehpur Police. There we got a byte from a senior police officer of the district on this complaint of the constable. In his/her statement, the officer said, ‘Constable Arunesh Kumar, appointed in Mahoba district, had informed about the theft of his/her bike on 17 November 2024 in Chandpur police station, Fatehpur district.’

The officer further said, ‘On his/her application, case crime number 173/2024 was registered on 18 November 2024. The analytical action of this case is prevalent. After this, we found another tweet on the X handle of Fatehpur Police, in which information was given about the case of bike theft of a constable. It is written in this tweet, ‘The allegations made in the case are baseless. On the basis of the application received, case crime number 173/2024 has been registered immediately on 18 November 2024 and investigative proceedings are underway as per rules. Fatehpur Police has termed the claims being made on social media that the FIR of bike theft by the policeman was registered after a week after much pleading by the policeman, as untrue and baseless. In the investigation of the alert team, this claim was not found to be true.
