Fact Check: These pictures of bridge collapse in Bihar are not from today, the posts being shared on social media are fake


New Delhi: Some users on social media platform Facebook shared some pictures of the broken bridge on November 22. Along with one of these pictures, it was claimed that a part of the bridge being built at a cost of Rs 1200 crore in Supaul, Bihar has collapsed. At the same time, in another post, the user wrote that the bridge being built at a cost of Rs 14 crore in Begusarai collapsed even before its inauguration. These pictures were shared as a recent incident. PTI Fact Check Desk investigated and found the viral social media post to be misleading. Investigation revealed that users are spreading confusion on social media by calling old incidents of bridge collapse in Bihar as recent ones.

On the same page, another post related to the bridge collapse in Bihar was shared on 22 November. It is written in the caption of the post that in Bihar, first a pillar sank, then the bridge started leaning. While sharing another picture of the bridge collapse on November 22 on Facebook, the user wrote that the bridge had collapsed before its inauguration in Begusarai, Bihar. The bridge was built at a cost of Rs 14 crore, what do you think! of post Link,archive link See more screenshots here.

The investigation revealed the truth

To confirm the claim, the desk reverse searched all three photographs one by one and found that these incidents of bridge collapse were not recent but quite old.

On November 22, a post was shared on Facebook claiming that a part of the bridge being built at a cost of Rs 1200 crore in Supaul, Bihar has collapsed. When the desk searched on Google with the help of related keywords, it was found that this incident happened in March 2024.

According to the report published on March 22, 2024 on the website of ETV Bharat, a laborer had died after the girder of three pillars of the country’s largest Bakour bridge being built in Supaul, Bihar, fell. It was told in the report that work was going on on this project under Bharat Mala Project on Kosi River, when suddenly 3 segments between pillar number 153 and 154 broke from the crane and fell down. The picture used in the report exactly matches the viral picture. It is clear that the matter is not of the present but of March 2024. Users are spreading confusion by sharing old news on social media. See the screenshot of the comparison of both the images here.

Second picture:
On November 22, a Facebook user claimed with this picture that a bridge being built in Bihar at a cost of Rs 1700 crore has collapsed. When the desk reverse searched the picture with the help of Google, it was found that this incident happened in June 2023.

According to the report published on Aaj Tak’s website on June 4, 2023, the bridge being built at a cost of more than Rs 1700 crore between Khagaria-Aguwani-Sultanganj in Bihar had collapsed. On February 23, 2014, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had laid the foundation stone of the four-lane bridge being built at a cost of Rs 1710 crore on the Aguani Ghat Ganga river in Sultanganj, Bhagalpur. The length of the bridge was 3.160 kilometers and its construction was 80 percent completed. To find out the truth behind the post going viral with the claim that the bridge built at a cost of Rs 14 crore in Begusarai has collapsed even before its inauguration, the desk reverse searched the picture. It was revealed that this incident happened in December 2022.

According to the report published on Aaj Tak’s website on December 19, 2022, the bridge built at a cost of about Rs 14 crore on the Gandak River in Begusarai, Bihar, broke and fell into the Gandak River even before its inauguration.
