Fact Check: Srijana’s claim of becoming a monk is misleading, this is why Bibek’s widow was seen in white saree

New Delhi: The world is crazy about the love story of Nepal’s Srijana Subedi and Bibek Pangeni. Cancer pushed Bibek into the jaws of death. Srijana is alone now. Meanwhile, a video is being shared on social media in which Srijana is seen in a white saree. In the video, another woman is seen giving something in Srijana’s hand and applying tilak on her forehead.

What is the claim?

Many social media users have posted this video. Many of them have claimed that Srijana has taken Sannyasa. X user Aishwarya Pradhan, claiming to have become a monk of Srijana, says that such love stories come up only occasionally in ages.

Claims of Srijana becoming a monk have been made on many other handles…

What is the truth?

Did Nepal’s Srijana take up sannyasa after the death of her husband Bibek? We asked this question on the internet not only in Hindi, English but also in Nepali. No search results were found in any language which contained news of Srijana’s retirement. As far as Srijana is seen wearing a white saree in the video, there is an ancient tradition in Hindu culture for a widow to wear white clothes. After someone’s death, the process of Shraddha ritual continues for 13 days.

Shraddha ritual is performed on the 12th day. In many parts of India and Nepal, Shraddha ritual is also called Kriya. It is customary in Nepal that all close relatives follow special rules for 13 days. The married daughter of the deceased observes it by taking bath and fasting only for five days and distant relatives for one day. In India, there is a rule of three days for the married daughter of the deceased. The son of the deceased, the husband and wife have to confine themselves to a number of penances during the 13-day mourning period. Close relatives including the son have to get tonsured. Since Srijana, being a wife, has also followed the same tradition, the video of which is going viral on social media.

conclusion

In our investigation, widow Srijana Subedi’s claim of being a monk has been found to be misleading. Her wearing a white saree is part of tradition, not a sign of taking up sannyasa.
