Fact Check: Is BJP forming a government after BBC’s exit? Fact check of viral video on social media


New Delhi: A BBC video is going viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that BJP is getting 347 seats, Congress 87 and other parties 108 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Users are sharing the video and claiming that this is the exit poll of Lok Sabha elections 2024, in which BJP is seen getting majority by leaving Congress behind by a huge margin. We have investigated this video and found out the truth.

What is in the viral video?
In this BBC video, which is viral on social media, the anchor says, “Till a few minutes ago, BJP and its alliance partners were leading with 347 seats. BJP is getting a clear majority. On the other hand, Congress and its allies were trailing with 87 seats.” The caption of the video reads, “Damn you BBC, you sycophants will not let Rahul become PM even in your dreams. At least you should have let them enjoy till 4 June.”

Share the video on X(Twitter) User wrote in the caption, ‘Now even BBC has given 347 seats to Modi ji. Let him/her enjoy till June 4 brother.’ The post has received more than 45,000 views so far.

It is worth noting that the voting for the last phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 is to be held on June 1, while the results will be declared on June 4.

How was the viral video investigated?
To investigate the viral video, we did a Google search using relevant keywords and found that it was uploaded on May 23, 2019. BBC official The full version of the viral video was found on the channel, titled, ‘India Election Results 2019: Narendra Modi’s Big Victory.’

The first three seconds of this video are going viral. In the video, the anchor says, ‘Let’s have a look at the results so far. Till a few minutes ago, BJP and its alliance partners were leading in 347 seats, a clear majority. Congress and its allies were trailing in 87 seats and the rest of the parties were leading in 108. There are many regional and local parties in the country. Now those partial results have given Narendra Modi the big lead he/she has hoped for.’ The anchor further says that the full results are still a few hours away. We will definitely bring them all to you as soon as they come.’

Let us tell you that in 2019 Lok Sabha Election results: May 23 The results were declared on 20 November, in which the BJP-led NDA alliance won 353 seats, while the Congress-led UPA alliance won 90 seats. The grand alliance of SP, BSP and RLD won 15 seats and other parties won 84 seats.

This makes it clear that the viral video is not from the current one but from the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It has no connection with the current Lok Sabha elections. Therefore, we consider the viral claim to be misleading.
