Fact Check: BJP did not give assurance of abolishing income tax, claim of newspaper cutting is wrong

New Delhi: ‘If everything goes well then the Prime Ministerial candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party Narendra Modi Under ‘King’s rule you will not have to pay income tax and service tax.’ This is the first line of a newspaper story. Newspaper cuttings are being shared on social media. The ex post has received more than 1.86 lakh views.

What is the claim?

Hansraj Meena has put this newspaper cutting in his/her ex-post and has written, ‘Today a newspaper from before 2014 was found in the trash. I swear, my eyes watered. his/her indirect claim is that such talk was made before Narendra Modi’s government was formed for the first time in 2014.

What is the truth?

When we took the investigation further, we found a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of ABP News on February 2, 2018. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had come to the ABP budget conference. The anchor showed him/her the same newspaper cutting on his/her mobile and asked what is the truth in it? On this, Nitin Gadkari says that this is a complete lie because BJP never gave any such assurance. According to him/her, BJP never even discussed it. he/she said that ABP should find out the truth. The anchor’s question and Nitin Gadkari’s answer can be heard on YouTube video from 3.12 minutes.

Then we saw BJP’s 2014 manifesto Investigated. But investigation revealed that BJP had not talked about removing the tax in its manifesto. The investigation says that before the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, there was news that if Narendra Modi government is formed, then income tax and service tax can be got rid of, but BJP never assured about it. This cutting is being shared on social media since 2018 with the claim that it was found in house cleaning, garbage etc. This claim that every person has been finding these newspaper cuttings in the trash for the last six years is ridiculous. However, this could be a form of sarcasm.

As far as the claim of removal of tax is concerned, the motive behind sharing the cutting of an old newspaper from 10 years ago may not be information but spreading rumours. Our investigation found that the indirect claim made on the basis of news that came 10 years ago is false.
