Fact Check: BBC did not report the sadhu sleeping on fire, misleading claim was made by linking the old video with Kumbh


New Delhi: A 3.01 minute video has gone viral on social media. In the video, an elderly monk is seen sleeping on a burning fire. his/her clothes or hair are not catching fire nor is any part of his/her body getting burnt. Along with the bright fire, a cloud of smoke is also rising and the sages are lying motionless on the fire.

What is the claim?

X user Piyush Singh has posted this video and claimed that the same BBC which has reported the incident of Baba imbibing fire, criticizes Hindu religion and culture. Piyush claims that BBC has run this report on Thursday, January 9.

What is the truth?

When we started investigating this video, we found this video file from many handles on YouTube. This video has been uploaded on YouTube channel named Devbuddham on September 28, 2012. In this video, the scene can be seen from 17.58 minutes which is visible in the 3.01 minute video shared on social media. In this video on YouTube channel, it has been told that Sri Guru Rambau Swami has the unique ability to assimilate fire within himself.

It further states, ‘This documentary tells their story and invites you to go on a journey beyond scientific expectations. his/her unique skills come from his/her secret mantra and breathing techniques as well as his/her deep devotion and dedication to his/her favorite Lord Ganapati Mahadev as well as his/her Guru Sri Rama Nandendra Saraswati Swamiji. Sri Guru Rambau Swami with all his/her humility performs this rare and unique 14 hour fire ritual every day for the last 45 years to aid in world peace and enlightenment of all individuals. Sri Guru, who barely eats or drinks, sleeps 3 hours a day and challenges many laws of nature, medicine and physics. Please do not try this at home. It is told in this documentary that Swamiji drinks a little milk and water. However, he/she had given up drinking water for many years and would only drink a few drops of water during puja. In this way Swami ji defies many rules of nature, science and medical science. This video was also found on many other YouTube channels.

News related to Yogi Guru Rambau Swami our partner newspaper The Times of India Published on November 17, 2009. It said – Rambau Swami had come to the Dattatreya temple located at Ghanagapur village in Afzalpur taluk of Gulbarga district in Karnataka and after hearing about the special Homa organized in the temple, he/she expressed his/her intention to lie down on the burning Homa Kund of 3 feet x 3 feet. Then to the surprise of the devotees thronging the temple, the saffron-clad Swami did just that. he/she slept on the burning fire for four hours. his/her followers told The Times of India that Swamiji had done this four or five times before in Tamil Nadu. he/she claimed to have spiritual powers.

Then we also found a video of a special program organized on Rambau Swami on the YouTube channel of news channel Aaj Tak. It is in four parts. Aaj Tak aired this program on 18 November 2009.

conclusion

In our investigation, Yogi’s claim of sleeping on fire was found to be true. However, X user has falsely claimed that BBC has telecast this feat of Swami who came to Haridwar Kumbh Mela on its channel on January 9. This video is not of Kumbh Mela but of a documentary.
