Fact Check: Arvind Kejriwal’s poster edited outside Tihar Jail, know the whole truth


New Delhi: The political temperature in Delhi is on high due to the hustle and bustle of assembly elections. Meanwhile, a poster of former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal is viral on social media. The poster is visible near the main gate of Tihar Jail. ‘Phir Aayenge Kejriwal’ is written on this poster, which is AAP’s election slogan for the upcoming Delhi elections. A reverse image search of the viral image led to an article published by The Caravan in 2018, which reported on custodial violence in Tihar Jail. The article had the same picture, but there was no Kejriwal poster on the left. The photo was credited to Getty Images in the caption.

Taking a hint from this, the original photo was found on Getty Images. This photo is dated October 4, 2006 and was taken by India Today journalist Arijit Sen. This shows that this photo was taken much before the establishment of Aam Aadmi Party in 2012. However, Kejriwal’s poster is not there in the original picture.

Logically Facts also found that this photo has been shared as a meme by some satirical pages on social media platforms ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. These accounts mentioned ‘satire’ in their bio or made it clear in the hashtags that it was a meme. Examples of these satirical posts can be seen here and here.

Apart from this, a similar picture claiming to show Kejriwal’s poster outside Tihar Jail had gone viral earlier also. However, this picture was also edited and was first shared as a joke on Kejriwal. The original photo, a version of which was published in The Hindu article in 2021, did not include Kejriwal’s poster.

It is clear that a 2006 file photo of the entry gate of Tihar Jail has been edited and a poster of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been added to it.
