Explainer: Unsold Prithvi Shaw, Warner and Shardul can play IPL 2025

New Delhi. In the mega auction of the Indian Premier League 2025, the franchise team spent lavishly on some players, while there were many whose names were not even bid. Rishabh Pant was bought by Lucknow Super Giants with a high bid of Rs 27 crore and he/she became the most expensive player in the history of the tournament. Whereas no one bought star players like Prithvi Shaw, David Warner and Shardul Thakur but their return is possible.

A total of 182 players were auctioned for IPL 2025 over two days on 24 and 25 November, in which a total of Rs 639.15 crore was spent. This auction was disappointing for many players. They did not receive any bids and remained unsold. Among the foreign players, Australia’s David Warner, Steve Smith and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson remained unsold. Indian stars like Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan, Shardul Thakur, Mayank Agarwal, and Umesh Yadav also do not have any contract at present.

Unsold players may return
Not being sold in the mega auction does not mean that the players did not have a chance to play in the 2025 IPL. If a member of a team’s current squad gets injured, they can name a replacement player from the auction.

Prithvi and Warner may return
In such a situation, all the players who remained unsold (both Indian and foreign) will get a chance to be a part of the auction. There is a condition in this that the replacement of the injured player can be the same player whose base price is less than the selling price of the injured player in the auction. For example, stars like Prithvi Shaw, David Warner and Shardur Thakur can become replacements only if the selling price of the injured player in the auction is less than their base price.
