1983 World Cup
The Indian team won the first World Cup title on this day i.e. 25 June 1983. On the same day, for the first time, every Indian got a chance to be happy from the cricket field. On the same day, Kapil Dev’s team immortalized his/her name by writing it in golden letters on the pages of history. From the same day, the story of just one game becoming a religion started in India. And today because of that day, cricket has become not just a sport but a religion in India. It is said in English that ‘Cricket is Religion’ and its foundation was laid 40 years ago on this day.
Today the cricket world is celebrating the 40th anniversary of India’s historic 1983 World Cup victory. The Indian team, led by Kapil Dev, created history on the historic ground of Lord’s and achieved the distinction of becoming the world champion for the first time. The strongest West Indies team of that time, which had won the last two World Cups in 1975 and 1979, was defeated by Team India and won the World Cup. After the first innings in that match, it seemed that the team has now lost. But the Indian bravehearts did not kneel down despite the low score and immortalized their name by winning the lost game.

In the final match, Team India was facing the most dangerous team of that era, West Indies. The Indian team was full of enthusiasm as the team had defeated the Windies once in the league round but once the Caribbean team had also beaten India. In such a situation, there was hope of a close fight. Even in the entire season, the Windies were not defeated by any team other than India. The final match began and after winning the toss, West Indies captain Clive Lloyd decided to field first.
After this, Indian batsmen Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth came out to bat. Malcolm Marshall and Andy Roberts were on fire with their deliveries. Meanwhile, Roberts gave India the first blow by dismissing Gavaskar for 2 runs who scored only 2 runs. After this Mohinder Amarnath played an innings of 26 runs and Srikkanth contributed 38 runs. Both added 57 runs for the second wicket. Srikkanth got out on a total score of 59 and Amarnath on 90. India’s score was 6 wickets at 111 in no time. In the last, India’s score reached 183 thanks to Syed Kirmani 14, Madan Lal 17 and Balwinder Sandhu 11.
West Indies needed 184 runs to become world champions for the third time in a row. The Indian fans were silent. The West Indies camp was overconfident that their victory was certain. But in the end something happened that the West Indies missed that World Cup as well as till date they could not win the ODI World Cup after that. The Indian bowlers did a feat that no one had expected. That team of Kapil Dev had become world famous within just a few hours. Even today, probably every cricket fan will remember the names of all the 14 players of that team.
After flops in batting, often when the score is low, the bowlers’ shoulders are bowed. But that team of Kapil Dev did not give up. That team showed how to make a lost bet their name. Chasing the target of 184 runs, the start of the West Indies also faltered. Gordon Greenidge was dismissed for 5 runs. After this Vivian Richards was looking in good touch and with him/her Desmond Haynes also seemed to want to end the match quickly.
Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal were the heroes of victory in the final
Then Madan Lal turned the game around and dismissed Haynes and then Richards to bring cheer to the Indian fans. In no time, half the Caribbean team had returned to the pavilion for 66 runs. The Indian bowlers were dominating and one by one the Windies batsmen were being driven back to the pavilion. Malcolm Marshall and Jeff Dujon walk to the crease after 76 for 6. Indian players again got upset. Mohinder Amarnath did the job this time, dismissing both Marshall and Dujon within 5 runs. Indian team and fans started smelling of victory.
Kapil Dev gave India 9th success by dismissing Andy Roberts. West Indies’ last pair was on the field and around 58 runs were required to win. Joel Garner and Michael Holding were at the crease. The score reached 140 and only 44 runs were left. Then came Mohinder Amarnath, who lbw Michael Holding on a brilliant ball and immortalized the name of this Indian team in the pages of history. After this wicket, India became the champion. Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath took 3-3 wickets.

The impact and importance of that historic victory tells us that today even after four decades, we are remembering that victory. Even today, that victory has special significance for the country and we are enjoying it. To reflect on that victory and the contribution of all the heroes of that team, Ranveer Singh starrer film 83 was also released on the big screen recently. Kapil Dev’s historic innings of 175 runs was also seen in this film, which the world could not see at that time due to the BBC strike.
