Ever faced political pressure… What did CJI DY Chandrachud say on the question of political pressure

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud dismissed fears of any interference by the legislature, saying he/she has never faced political pressure. he/she said that in his/her 24 years as a judge, he/she never faced any political pressure from any government. Responding to a question during an event organised by the Oxford Union, he/she said that judges in India are trained to take decisions according to established traditions based on constitutional order rather than emotions in cases.

he/she said, “If you ask me about political pressure, government pressure, then I want to tell you that I have been a judge for 24 years and I have never faced any political pressure from the ruling party. The democratic traditions we follow in India also include that we live a life isolated from the political organ of the government.”

Talking about social pressure, he/she said that judges often think about the social impact of their decisions. he/she said that many of our decisions have a deep impact on society. As judges, I believe it is our duty to be aware of the impact of our decisions on the social order.
