Engine came from England, ran 10 KM in 38 minutes… The story of India’s first goods train is very interesting.

New Delhi: Indian Railways is the fourth largest rail network in the world and the second largest in Asia. Thousands of trains reach here every day from one place to another. According to reports, more than 22 thousand trains run in the country, out of which more than 9 thousand are goods trains. But do you know when and where the country’s first goods train ran? The first goods train in India was run on this day i.e. 22 December 1851, which ran from Roorkee to Piran Kaliyar. Today we are going to tell about the country’s first goods train.

The goods train was running to carry soil and construction materials.

Railway services started in India in the 18th century. The British started laying railway tracks to connect one city to another. During this period, the first goods train was started in 1851. This train ran from Roorkee to Piran Kaliyar on the same day. This region is currently located in the state of Uttarakhand. This goods train was used to carry soil and construction materials during the Ganga Canal construction project.

The engine was imported from England

India’s first goods train, like other trains of that time, ran on a steam engine. For this, a steam-powered railway engine was ordered from England. This train had only two bogies, which were capable of carrying a weight of about 180-200 tonnes. This train covered the distance of 10 kilometers in about 38 minutes, i.e. its speed was about 6.44 kilometers per hour. This train ran for about nine months, but in an accident in 1852, its engine caught fire, after which it stopped operating.
