Islamabad : The Shehbaz government and the top court are at loggerheads over the dates of provincial elections in Pakistan. The opposition also stands by the court’s decision in which the Election Commission was ordered to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on May 14. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) on Friday. Shehbaz Sharif has called the meeting to get the military leadership’s support for delaying the elections, citing security concerns.
No official statement has been revealed regarding the meeting of the committee, which acts as Pakistan’s ‘major decision-making body on national security’. Pakistani newspaper Dawn, quoting sources, has claimed that the meeting will be held on Friday under the chairmanship of Shahbaz Sharif. According to Dawn news, it will include Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Air Force and Navy Chiefs, Defense, Finance and Information Ministers.

Conditions not good for campaigning?
If some insiders are to be believed, the government will once again ask top officials to brief them about possible threats from terrorists in case elections are held in Punjab on May 14 on the orders of the Supreme Court. According to the report, a source said that military officials had informed the government that terrorist organizations had regrouped in the tribal districts bordering Afghanistan. So the conditions are not favorable for election campaign.

Emergency going to be imposed in Pakistan?
According to the newspaper report, another source claimed that considering the current situation, the option of ‘imposing emergency’ in the country may also be discussed in the meeting. Under Article 232 of the Constitution of Pakistan, emergency can be imposed on account of war and internal disturbance, for a maximum period of one year. However, a resolution passed by the Parliament is necessary to impose emergency. Imran Khan criticized the meeting, saying that the government would use security as an excuse to postpone the elections.
